Bass Fishing Biopic In The Works
This post goes out to our good friend Tomas “The Bassmasta” Bajuk. There have been plenty of sports biopics in the past, but this will be the first one I’m aware of to “tackle” the glorious sport of bass fishing. Fox Atomic are setting up a movie about Mike Iaconelli, winner of the 2003 CITGO Bassmasters Classic and all-around relentless competitor. His catch phrase “Never give up!” has inspired countless fishermen to stick to their guns and keep trying. The movie will be based on his autobiography Fishing On The Edge: The Mike Iaconelli Story, which was co-written by Andrew and Brian Kamenetzky. (Interesting fun fact from Wikipedia: Iaconelli was named one of the 10 most hated athletes by GQ magazine! Apparently fishers are a jealous lot.) I’ve never found fishing to be particularly exciting to watch on TV so I’m definitely curious to see exactly how they can make it exciting in a feature film.

for a guy who is into “sports” movies, i cant say that i am interested in seeing this flick. i might give it a chance, but i cant see this holding my interest for a couple of hours. maybe its because i believe fishing is one of the most boring things you can do, i think that i would rather watch paint dry.
Posted by Chopper on August 18th, 2006Chopper, Chopper, Chopper. That is the typical response of people who don’t fish or can’t catch fish. If fishing is so boring why does it continue to be so popular? Every outing for me is a learning experience and an adventure even when I don’t catch anything and yeah, it happens, but to me its not just about catching the most or the biggest (except on a tournament day).
Fishing is unpredictable. What better way to enjoy a challenge, be one with nature, outsmart a finned beast and admire it long enough to release it swim another day? I dunno man, I guess my experience is more positive than your exposure. Believe me, its addicting. And the industry proves it.
I’m not surprised to see Mikey forefront this project. He is best know to be a loudmouth who likes to throw temper tantrums and he has that commerically appealing boisterous personality.
Plus he is a good fisherman placing consistently in the top 20. Which is good. I think his combined total winnings(big cash payouts usually in the top 10) have totalled just over 1 million bucks…not too bad to get a paycheck here and there for a hard day of fishing or two.

Posted by Cutter on August 20th, 2006To the fisherman, its a great thing. It’s been a long time coming, but because Pro Bass fishing in the US is almost equal to NASCAR, it’s more for the American audience. And Pro Bass fishing is picking up here, Italy, South Africa, Japan, and Zimbabwe. Of course, the fish are only native to North American and were transferred over to places with similar habitats to help improve their fisheries.
