Trailer for Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia Online

Well it’s about time we had another hard-boiled detective story brought to the big screen, and who better to do it than Brian De Palma? This movie looks phenomenal. The Black Dahlia is based on the book by James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential) about the unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short in the 40’s (she was reportedly dubbed Black Dahlia by newspaper reporters covering the case). To be honest I had heard the name but never really knew why the murder was so well-known. Short wasn’t really famous herself before the murder, but I guess this is such a high profile crime simply because it was one of the biggest LAPD investigations of that time, and also possibly because of the horrific state in which her body was found (cut in half at the waist). The movie stars Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart as the investigating officers, with Mia Kirshner playing Elizabeth Short herself. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank and Rose McGowan; check out the trailer over on Yahoo! now. The Black Dahlia is set to be released in theatres everywhere on September 15th, 2006.

  1. LA Confidential is one of my top favorites, and I can’t wait to see this. It’s been on my list of movies to see this year, but I didn’t know it was coming as soon as September.

Hartnett hadn’t impressed me in anything until Sin City, and it looks like he’s using a bit of that noir style, hard-boiled voiceover again here, which he seems to do well. Plus, Scarlett Johansson – ’nuff said.

  2. L.A. Con is a great flick so this one looks promising. DePalma is a great director, i just wish that the cast was alittle better.

  3. I love Aaron Eckhart, and I love Scarlett Johansson. It’s nice to see Brian de Palma going back to something in the thriller genre. Admittedly he hasn’t strayed far, but this sounds alot more like something where he will be able to implement his style, without it overtaking the movie which has been kind of an issue with his last few movies.

PS. The related posts is still kinda wacky. “Aeon Flux” trailer? Not only do I see no connection, its also years old. Don’t remove it though! High potential for funny coincidences.
