Steely Dan Accuses You, Me and Dupree of Plagiarism
Here’s a strange news story that I can’t take entirely seriously, but found amusing nonetheless. Apparently the jazz rock band Steely Dan are claiming that the concept for the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree was ripped from the lines of one of their songs, and are now asking for an apology. The tune in question is called “Cousin Dupree” from the 2001 album Two Against Nature, and the band has written an open letter on their website to Owen’s brother Luke, asking for him to be the voice of reason and convince his brother to do what’s right. It’s pretty obvious that the letter is a joke, although it was really written by the band members. It’s worth a read though, as it’s pretty funny. Here’s a quote:
It’s your little brother Owen C. that’s the problem. We realize what a drag it is to have people coming to you about his lameness all the time and we’re really sorry to be doing the same thing — believe us, usually that’s not what we’re all about. But it so happens that your brother has gotten himself mixed up with some pretty bad Hollywood schlockmeisters and that may be doing, like, permanent damage to his good creds and whatever reputation for coolness he may still have — let’s face it “Bottle Rocket” was a ways back already.
