Showtime’s “Huff” Axed After Two Seasons

Cable network Showtime has reluctantly been forced to bring their critically-acclaimed drama Huff to a premature close this month, and have officially decided not to renew the show for a third season. Despite having received seven Emmy nominations for its first season, and adding new cast members that included Sharon Stone and Angelica Huston, ratings remained below expectations throughout season 2. The second season finale aired last Sunday, and will leave many of the show’s storylines unfinished. It really is too bad, but I can’t say I’m surprised. I know I couldn’t bring myself to keep up with the show’s second season, despite the fact that every time I did watch I was blown away by how deftly it combined humour with deeply touching moments. The series, which stars Hank Azaria as a psychiatrist who is dealing with great stress in his own family life, simply lacked a hook or defining concept to keep people coming back. It was like the brilliant art house film that no one will get off their ass to go see simply because it doesn’t sound very exciting. Although the cancellation is unfortunate, I think it was ultimately justified. I still plan on catching all of the final season at some point though, and I stand by my recommendation on watching this high quality show, especially for fans of HBO’s Six Feet Under.

  1. i havent seen this show yet but i am interested in seeing it. i dont like when they just axe a show without them being able to clean up the stporylines. the least they can do is film one last show.

  2. Six Feet Under is unarguably one of the BEST shows to ever come on TV. I still can’t believe it’s over. Will have to give “Huff” a chance when I see it on DVD.

  3. that’s too bad it’s cancelled, but you’re right. it really did lack a hook. i liked the first season, but haven’t seen the second yet and now i don’t really care if i do or not since it’s cancelled without closure.

  4. I can’t believe they axed this show. It was an allstar cast and kept me hanging on the edge of my seat for every episode. my husband and i watched it religiously. I think if they moved the show to HBO it would get more people watching it. Not too many have Showtime. The show is amazing. Sorry to see it go…especially with all that was going on at the time all up in the air!
