Chow Yun-Fat in Zhang Yimou’s “Curse of the Golden Flower”

How do you follow up a couple of critically acclaimed, beautiful martial arts epics like Hero and House of Flying Daggers? With more of the same of course! Respected Chinese director Zhang Yimou is currently in production on his next film, a movie called Curse of the Golden Flower starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li. The story is about a family struggle for power between a King, Queen and their 3 sons, and the movie promises more ridiculously colourful costumes, gorgeous backgrops and elaborate set pieces. It was announced this week that Sony Pictures Classics have picked up the film for North American distribution, and it will most likely receive a limited release similar to House of Flying Daggers. Over at Monkeypeaches they have a bunch of set photos and more info on the film, which was originally titled The City of Golden Armor. There seem to be a lot of asian directors attempting these massive historical epics at the moment, but after the lukewarm reception received by Chen Kaige’s The Promise, American distributors have become less interested in them. Zhang Yimou, however, has a proven track record and I have little doubt that this will be a solid film, at the very least worth seeing simply for the eye candy.
