Trailer for “The Night Listener” Starring Robin Williams

After putting audiences through the mediocre comedy R.V., it looks like Robin Williams is eager to get back to the darker, more dramatic roles that he has been taking on in recent years. The Night Listener is based on a book by Armistead Maupin about Gabriel Noone, a writer and radio personality who receives a manuscript from a young boy who was sexually abused. It turns out the boy is a listener to Noone’s radio show, and they begin to develop a relationship over the phone, eventually leading Noone to attempt to uncover the truth behind what is happening in the young man’s life. The trailer for The Night Listener is somewhat frustrating; it can only hint that there are dark secrets around every corner but otherwise reveals very little about the movie. I understand that you don’t want to give everything away, but I don’t know that there is enough here to get me hooked. The Night Listener is directed by Patrick Stettner (The Business of Strangers) and stars Robin Williams, Toni Collette, Bobby Cannavale, Sandra Oh and good ol’ Rory Culkin. Gotta love those Culkins. Look for it in theatres on August 4th.

  1. I can’t see the trailer on this ratty old pc but I can tell from the bit of story you’ve shared and the cast that I’m going to be seeing this one for sure.

I really like Williams in his “darker” roles. Even the mediocre ones (“The Final Cut” comes to mind) are pretty good.

I still want to see another great comedy like “Good Morning, Vietnam”. He did it well and it’d definately one of my favourites. He just needs a good scrip!

  2. Wow! Looks really, really interesting. I never heard of this movie before I read this piece of news.

Definetly looks like something worth seeing. It looks smart, and a smart thriller is hard to find.

  3. williams has been doing better dramatic roles lately than the comic roles. so i am looking forward to this one.
