Trailer For “The Wicker Man” Remake Starring Nicolas Cage
Just in time for 6/6/06 (and I assume because it will be playing with The Omen, which opens in theatres today), the first trailer for the remake of The Wicker Man has gone online over at Apple. Although I haven’t seen the 1973 original, I am already kind of turned off by what I’m seeing in the trailer. It just looks like another one of these “new school” horror movies: another creepy little girl, another mysterious town, another dark secret. Nicolas Cage seems like he sleepwalks through the movie too… but then again, it’s Nicolas Cage. Even more worrying is the fact that the movie is written and directed by Neil LaBute, who previously directed the dark comedies In The Company of Men and Nurse Betty. It’s not that I think the guy’s a hack per se, but I just don’t see him as a horror director. The Wicker Man is scheduled to hit theatres on September 1st. Check out the trailer now at the link below.

Yeah, this trailer doesn’t really do it for me, but I’m still interested in seeing it, especially because I’m a big fan of LaBute’s work. I saw the original, and it’s basically a critique of conservative British society, and the whole film takes sides with this cultish group that lives on the island. So, I’m hoping LaBute would continue that theme.
