Dragonriders of Pern Movie In The Works

Well it looks like the boom in fantasy movies that I was expecting to follow the Lord of the Rings trilogy may finally be upon us. I guess enough time has passed that now you can make a fantasy movie without people saying it’s a rip off of Lord of the Rings (I suppose Narnia proved that, even though it was vastly inferior if you ask me). It was announced this week that Canadian production company Copperheart Entertainment is going ahead with production on a movie based on Anne McCaffrey’s series of books about the Dragonriders of Pern. I vaguely remember reading some of these books when I was younger; the story involves a lethal substance known as the Thread that rains down on the planet Pern every few hundred years and specially trained protectors must ride dragons to burn the Thread out of the sky. Apparently there are 19 books in the series (!) so if the first movie is successful you can be sure there will be a few sequels. No word yet on cast or crew for the project, so it’s pretty hard to judge what kind of quality the film will be. Interesting to note however: the series was originally supposed to be developed into a TV show by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) but the project eventually got dropped when Moore refused to compromise certain elements of the story. Now someone please tell me a Dragonlance movie is finally going to get greenlit any day now!

  2. actually, there are upward 30 books in the entire series, and still coming! I am personally a huge fan of the books, andread them all, hehe. Anything else known by now?

  3. Dragonflight, the first book was full of adventure and excitment. I can’t think why it’s taking so long to get to the big screen, and then to DVD. I’d opt for animation and stright to DVD, but please! Don’t try to change elements of the story – I want it stright no alterations!!!!

  4. I heard that they were making the movie months ago. can anyone give me a guess to what year it will come out? do u think they’ll make the other series (eg, to ride pegesus series) come out on the big screen?

  5. I was introduced to the series by my father, I am quite excited to know that its finally making it to the big screen after all the dragon movie flops (eragon). I just hope the story is not altered and has just a great of an impact as Lord Of The Rings for i highly respect the series.

  6. a cruel publicity stunt..to dangle a movie version in front of you, and a year later….not even a peep…cruel i say….vic

  9. I really hope this person’s not pulling our leg!!! I LOVE this series, and I hope they make a movie that is not junk! That would be insulting….

  10. Hasn’t this deal been “in the works” with Copperheart Entertainment since 2007?
Patience has never been one of my virtues. This definitely applies when it comes to the anticipation of a film surrounding a much-beloved series.
Hurry up already so I can spend all my money on related Pern memorabilia!!

  11. I am extremely excited that there is a film being made to honor Anne McCaffery. She has caught us up in her world and made us all wonder if we would be “chosen” to be a life-mate of a golden queen dragon. How brilliant a novelist she is to ensnare our imaginations with the love of dragon-lore. Shells, I personally don’t care how long it takes to produce the movie. I just want it to be tastefully done, to uphold the dignity, to tell the true story of the Queen Rider Anne. By the Shards of Faranth! Let it be nobly done!

  12. omgomgomgomg! i am so excited! i feel like the ONLY person in my school who reads dragonriders of pern and i am so happy there would be a movie to introduce pern to those people! hehehe

  13. WOW! iut makes me so happy to such a good book series become a movie, as long as it isn’t messed up.

  14. I’ve been watting for this movie sence my dad got me started on the book series! I just hope they stay true to the books and not have the problem auther book-to-movies have had. Don’t DISSAPOINT us

  15. i just read all the books, this would make a fantastic movie. it has been around so many years, i was surprised there wasn’t already a movie done.

  16. I am the third generation of my family to be a Pern, and Anne Mccafrey fan, so to hear a rumor of a Pern movie is so exciting. According to different sites, it’s slated for 2011. I haven’t found anything more about it. I am anxiously waiting for the cast to come out. They will have to get some really good actors for F’lar, Lessa and Robinton. I hope this movie really does come out and does the books justice.
