Kevin Smith ‘Digs Flicks’

FanboysKevin Smith has spoken. According to him, Southland Tales was actually well recieved at its Cannes screening and X3: Last Stand is a great ‘flick’ that we will ‘dig’:

“Landed at two in the afternoon on Sunday, got to the hotel, showered, got dressed, and hit the “Southland Tales” premiere at the Palais. Screening went great. Some of the reviews haven’t been kind, but the word is the NY Times and the Village Voice love the flick. Also…hit the “X-Men: The Last Stand” premiere last night. The entire cast was in attendance, and the flick was insanely well-received by the packed-house audience. Anyone who was sweating Brett Ratner as a director can relax: the flick’s a fun watch.”

That’s alot of flick digging. I started to think about how much weight (not literal weight) Smith holds in regards to his opinions on ‘flicks’. To dig or not to dig? Is critical acclaim important to the success of a ‘flick’? Well it helps, but it certainly isn’t a requirement. Box office numbers prove time and time again that people don’t always listen to what’s being said about a ‘flick’. In my opinion, people will see what they want to see. With blogs and podcasts becoming another form of free form journalism, the collective opinions of thousands of fanboys could override two thumbs up or down with ease. If a movie bleeds, the bloggers surround it like hungry girlfriend-less, Brett Ratner hating, Joker casting speculating, brown coat wearing sharks. Sharks that can creat such a buzz, positive or negative, that it can sink a ‘flick’ for good. It all takes one person to lead the way. Kevin Smith has spoken, and the people will dig X3. That is unless Harry Knowles hates it. In that case, a rip will form in the time continuum and the Universe will implode upon itself.

  1. i agree, people are going to see a flick whether or not it gets good reviews from critics or whatever. i think that the more someone talks about a film being bad, people are going to go and check a flick out to see how bad it is for themselves.
i dont really look at reviews to decide on seeing a movie. if i like the story or the cast or whatever, i am going to check it out. its just like this Ghostrider movie, its not getting good vibes, but since i like Nic Cage, i am going to check it out.
