Star Wars Original Unaltered Trilogy Coming To DVD
Alright, let’s be honest here… George Lucas may be responsible for creating the most successful movie franchise of all time, but he’s also had a few missteps along the way. He’s taken the franchise in some weird directions and pissed off fans on more than one occasion, and you know what? That’s fine. It’s his franchise and he can run it into the ground if he wants to. The thing that annoys me is when he tries to double back on his bad decisions and fix the mistakes afterwards, rather than just live with them. This is why I can’t decide if I’m happy or pissed off at this week’s announcement that “in response to overwhelming demand”, the original trilogy of Star Wars movies will finally be released this September in their initial, unaltered form. Finally no Greedo shooting first, no CGI Jabba, and, well… no CGI effects at all. But why couldn’t they have just offered this back in 2004 when the original trilogy first came out on DVD? Or in 2005 when they re-released the original trilogy DVD box set… again? The 3 movies will be available individually in 2-disc sets that include both the original theatrical cut, and the 2004 digitally remastered versions. Look for them in stores on September 12th (along with the LEGO Star Wars II video game). Oh, and they will be “attractively priced”. Is anyone out there buying this?

wow, never thought Lucas would release them. although its just more money for him. I’ll buy it, only cuz I don’t own the box set that’s out.
Posted by James on May 4th, 2006lucas should really move on to something new.
Posted by Chopper on May 4th, 2006Yeah he’s basically just as obsessed and frantic about the movies as the fans are. He’s the same as all the nerds who haven’t stopped talking about Star Wars for 30 years. I need that new trillogy though because I hate the fullscreen altered editions I have now.
Posted by Jackson on May 4th, 2006As I am a purist who saw the originals back in the day, I boycotted Lucas’ sacrilege of messing with the classic versions. NOW I will purchase the movies and not be one of the poor fanboys who will have to cough up 60 bucks (probably) for 3 DVD sets that contain content they already got hosed for a couple years back. This one came close to colorizing (sp?) original B&W movies for me and, even though it’s a blatant money grab, I’m glad they are finally coming available.
Posted by Wighthouse on May 7th, 2006The last set I bought was the 4 disc package that included the great documentary on the making of “Star Wars”.
Good enough for me, CGI Jabba and Greedo shooting first aside.
