I don’t think it’s quite as “rah rah rah” as you think it is Tom (but I can’t say for sure since I haven’t seen it yet).

You bring up a good point, themarina. A lot of people simply don’t want to see a disturbing or emotionally traumatic movie that is based on a true story because it’s too damn depressing. Hotel Rwanda is a good example. Most people want to go to a movie to escape reality and it may dramatically affect the commercial success of United 93.

Even after all the positive hype, I’m going to pass on United 93. I feel better being in the dark about it. On the other hand, I’m excited about “Hard Candy”. Sounds like it may actually be (I’m not holding my breath though!) “scary”. Oh I can only hope…

I agree with Goon. Critics have a reputation to uphold. Being in the spotlight is tough to voice what one truly feels.

I think critics are less likely to say something like that than the general public would.

I think it’s just as likely that some critics could take the opposite emotional response…to write the movie off as exploitive and ‘too soon’.

95% rating on tomatometer makes me finally interested in seeing it, if only to see what the fuss is about.

I wonder how many (not suggesting its a lot, but you never know) are giving it a pass becuase its a movie many will feel they have to like… I just think sometimes many critics might think its bad form to trash a film based on a historic tragedy.
