I was a big fan of the Zucker, Zucker and Abrahams team back when they were doing such classic movies as Airplane!, Top Secret! and The Naked Gun. In recent years they have kind of lost their touch, resorting to unfunny parody movies like the Scary Movie series, but back in the day they were creating some of the best comedies of all time. The Naked Gun of course, was based on a short-lived TV series that they also did called Police Squad! (they love those exclamation marks), which first introduced Lesley Nielsen as the character of Frank Drebin. Fans will be pleased to hear that all 6 episodes of Police Squad! will finally be released on DVD sometime this year. The series was previously available on laserdisc, but David Zucker revealed that they will be recording new audio commentary tracks for the DVD. I never got a chance to see Police Squad! when it was on TV but I’ve since seen clips of the show and it is just as hilarious as all their earlier movies were. A release date has not yet been announced, but I can’t wait for this to come out and we’ll definitely have more details as soon as we hear anything.
