Operation McFly: Why Won’t Nike Release The Back To The Future Shoes?

Sneaker afficionados unite! Once again the internet is helping to mobilize a movement against corporate giant Nike, but if you thought it was about slave labour or unfair business practices this time around, you couldn’t be farther from the truth. Instead, Canadian “sneakerographer”(is that a real word?) Al Cabino has started a petition to get Nike to release the futuristic shoes that Marty McFly wears in the movie Back To The Future 2. Think it’s just a joke? The petition, dubbed “Operation McFly”, has currently gained over 8000 signatures so far, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Cabino calls these shoes the “holy grail of movie sneakers” — apparently quite a big deal to a growing subculture of sneaker-obsessed collectors and fashionistas. “There is a street legend that says that in 2015, Nike will come out with them, but there are a lot of people who don’t want to wait ten years.” My question is, would anyone actually wear these things? And would they self-adjust to your feet like they do in the movie? Hey, while we’re at it, I’d also like a self-drying jacket and a hoverboard. You can sign the petition here, and read more in this Montreal Mirror article. (Thanks to Hayz for the heads up on this story.)
