Black Hawk Down Extended Cut On The Way
What is it with some movies that studios can’t just let them be? I think they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point, but still looking for some way they can keep the same number of DVD releases coming out that they’ve had over the past few years. Ridley Scott’s 2001 movie Black Hawk Down is about to get yet another DVD release in June, and I am guessing Ridley Scott had nothing to do with it. I say that because this is not a Director’s Cut, but rather an “Extended Cut” of the movie that features 8 additional minutes of footage. The only other notable things about this release are that the movie has been digitally remastered, and features an extra called PBS Presents: “Frontline: Ambush in Mogadishu†with Interactive Mission Map/Timeline. Considering that was already an extra on the amazing 3-disc Deluxe Edition of Black Hawk Down, and considering how much other great stuff was packed into that release, I have no idea why anyone would buy this. The Black Hawk Down Extended Cut hits stores on June 6th at a suggested price of 19.94 U.S.

Posted by Chopper on March 29th, 2006I don’t own a copy already, but I did like the movie. I’ll probably get this….Hopefully he last one.
LOL
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on March 29th, 2006Ooops, I mean the 3 disc that is out if there is no difference.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on March 29th, 2006The 3-disc is still the one to get if you ask me. The new one will only have 8 additional minutes of footage in the movie, and nowhere near the same amount of special features.
Posted by Sean on March 29th, 2006I’m already hearing rumors of the extended extended superscam edition. It will be out 3 weeks after this one and it will have an extra 2 seconds of footage.
I don’t know about you but I’m going to wait. It will be totally worth the extra 10 bucks.
Posted by Chian on March 29th, 2006Rant alert!!
Posted by Sean on March 29th, 2006Its a rant that is worth airing.
But yeah, 8 mins of extra footage, unless its all war and gore, is probably not worth it.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on March 29th, 2006Well put it this way… what would you rather have: 8 extra minutes of “war and gore” or hours and hours of documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes and audio commentary tracks?
(Incidentally, I have no idea what the extra footage is, but I’m willing to bet it’s the same deleted/alternate scenes that are already on the 3-disc set as a separate feature.)
Posted by Sean on March 29th, 2006Oh, for sure Sean. On some movies, the documentaries the best part.
Any deluxe edition DVD release should have the deleted scenes left in the movie. That will make it extended. And really, how much space on a DVD is used when you offer a “Theatrical” and “Extended” version.
As much as I am curious about the cuts, I just like watching the movie the way it was meant to be presented.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on March 30th, 2006Sometimes the orginal ‘cut’ versions of films are the way they were meant to be presented.
Posted by Jay C. on March 30th, 2006That could be true too, but I’ve seen deleted scenes where leaving them in wouldn’t have impaired the movie at all. When stuff like that is cut its because its to shorten the movie.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on March 30th, 2006Or because of pacing. Sometimes extra stuff, even if the scene is cool, can drag a movie down and affect the pacing of the story.
Posted by Jay C. on March 30th, 2006this would be a good topic for Forum Friday… extended editions: yay or nay?
I prefer the extended cuts of Fellowship and Two Towers, but dont prefer the extended ROTK cut.
the new version of Donnie Darko that got rereleased wasnt as good to me either.
