Randy Quaid Sues Producers of Brokeback Mountain

What is it about Brokeback Mountain that seems to be bringing out everyone’s dark side? For a movie that’s supposed to be encouraging tolerance and acceptance, there sure are a lot of squabbles surrounding it. First there was the massive fit of whining and moaning (unsubstantiated, in my opinion) about the fact that Crash took home the Oscar for Best Feature Film. Now actor Randy Quaid has decided to take the film’s producers to court, claiming that they hid their intentions to give Brokeback Mountain a high profile worldwide release so they could get actors to sign on at a lower price. Quaid says he accepted a much smaller fee than he normally would demand because he was lead to believe it would be a “low-budget, art-house film, with no prospect of making any money”. The movie has since grossed over $80 million. Whether or not he has a valid claim, I can’t help but wonder if he still would have filed this lawsuit had Brokeback Mountain won the Oscar. After all, isn’t that why actors do art house movies in the first place? For the art and the recognition… not the money?

  1. The royalties are finally starting to run dry from the National Lampoon Vacation Series’ well, eh Randal?

I wonder if he was flippin’ mad when BBM was a national release or just now after all that was said and done? It would have been easier to reach a settlement leading up to the Oscars as not to create “bad” publicity prior.
