Director Werner Herzog Shot By Fan During Interview
Man oh man. Here’s another completely bizarre news story involving the eccentric German filmmaker Werner Herzog that I would never have believed if not for the fact that it involves Werner Herzog so it must be true. Last week, while filming an interview for the BBC with journalist Mark Kermode about his movie Grizzly Man, a sniper (reportedly a crazed fan) opened fire on him with an air rifle. According to Kermode, “I thought a firecracker had gone off. Herzog, as if it was the most normal thing in the world, said, ‘Oh, someone is shooting at us. We must go.’ ” Herzog then carried on the interview while bleeding from a pellet wound. Herzog insisted, “It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid.” Forget about Chuck Norris people… Werner Herzog is one tough dude.

This is a radio broadcast on the bbc featuring the reporter who was interviewing Herzog during the time of the shooting (thanks to the person who posted this on our friend Doug Nagy’s site, http://www.dougnagy.com). He dismisses any rumours that the shooting was set up by Herzog to add to his dangerous reputation. It seems as though the man stands behind the story, saying that Herzog “didn’t even flinch” when shot at. He also suggested to Herzog that he was European Cinema’s answer to 50 Cent. Appropriately enough, Herzog responded with “Who’s 50 Cent?”

I can imagine him saying this, and it is the funniest thing ever.
