78th Annual Academy Award Nominees Announced
For those keeping up with this year’s Oscar race, by now you’ve probably seen the list of 2006 nominees that were released earlier today. For everyone else who might be curious, you can click the link below to see the full list now. Not really too many surprises this year; “Brokeback Mountain” tops out with 8 nominations. I didn’t expect “Crash” or “Good Night and Good Luck” to be as well represented as they are (6 nods apiece), and even Spielberg’s “Munich” was a bit of an underdog going in. I don’t know if Crash would have been nominated so many times if it wasn’t for Ebert’s constant and overwhelming praise this past year. It’s also interesting to see Terrence Howard get a nomination for “Hustle & Flow” (I haven’t seen the movie but as long as he wasn’t nominated for “Get Rich or Die Tryin” I’m okay with it). Werner Herzog definitely got dissed in the Best Documentary category, but there’s still some solid choices in there. As for the rest… meh, not really much to be excited about. But is there ever?

I’m sad Grizzly Man wasn’t in the running, but I think it’s not nominated because of some technical disqualification… theres certain rules that have to be followed to be eligible and he must have broke one of em…
Posted by Goon on January 31st, 2006Yeah I wonder if there’s too much of Timothy Treadwell’s own footage for it to be considered Herzog’s work.
Posted by Sean on January 31st, 2006do you remember if Capturing the Friedmans was nominated? almost the same thing, though maybe less footage overall in that case.
Posted by Goon on January 31st, 2006Capturing the Friedman’s won best documentary.
Posted by Jay C. on February 1st, 2006crash should win best picture, hoffman for best actor, and that desperate housewife best actress.
Posted by Chopper aka Mikie on February 1st, 2006Crash deserves best picture about as much as Pluto Nash warrants a second viewing.
Posted by Goon on February 1st, 2006I’ll be watching this year hoping that Crash doesn’t pick up a single award. Not that I absolutely hated Crash but I did find it pretty mediocre and it has to be the most overrated movie in recent memory.
The one category that I was pleasantly surprised by was Best Animated Feature. For once, they’ve recognized only the “Best” instead instead of every animated feature of the year.
Posted by Nuno on February 1st, 2006I’d like to see Munich win as much as possible but that’s just the Spielberg fanboy in me probably. I’m sure Goon would disagree
Capote definitely doesn’t deserve best picture I don’t think, that movie is all about Hoffman’s performance.
As for Crash, well, I wouldn’t mind it winning screenplay or something I guess but definitely not best picture.
Posted by Sean on February 1st, 2006I finally got around to seeing Munich and I thought it was great. War Of The Worlds is on my “Worst Of” list of last year (along with Crash), so it was nice to see Spielberg make a good film last year as well.
Posted by Nuno on February 1st, 2006WOTW got nominated for a lot of Razzies this year I believe. I still don’t think it was anywhere near being one of the worst movies of the year. Illogical maybe… but Deuce Bigalow bad? Come on now, give Tom Cruise a break!
Posted by Sean on February 1st, 2006who gives a crap about the razzies… its a funny idea in concept but they just make up categories and get really loose with their picks… they exist to poke fun at specific media whipping boys rather than truly recognize the worst in film…
its like what Muchmusic’s Fromage has become…
i dont worry about Munich winning because i dont think it even has a remote chance.
Posted by Goon on February 1st, 2006The Razzies are ghey, why would i need a bunch of assfarts telling me whats crap.
Basically if i haven’t seen it, means its crap.
because i am the master and ruler of the world.
Ps
your mother is fat
