Spike Jonze Directs TV Commercial for The Gap
As much as we all hate advertising, I’m sure we all have, at some level, an appreciation for certain commercials or ads that are particularly creative. Many a budding filmmaker has gotten his or her start directing TV commercials — including Mr. Being John Malkovich himself, Spike Jonze. Here’s a new commercial he recently shot for The Gap that pretty much rules. The basic idea behind the commercial is that The Gap is in the process of renovating their stores, but as many people have pointed out, there’s also some clever social commentary at work underneath it all. So much so, that apparently the suits felt a little uncomfortable with it and forced Jonze to replace the classical music with something goofy to reassure people that “Hey, this is supposed to be funny!” You can check out that revamped version of the commercial here, or download the superior original cut via Hollywood Elsewhere at the link below.
