Ever since “24 Hour Party People”, Michael Winterbottom is really starting to come into his own as a director to watch. His next upcoming movie looks to be an interesting challenge: he has decided to adapt a novel by Laurence Sterne called “The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman”. The thing about it is, the book has been labelled “unfilmable” by many people because of its multiple layers and chaotic shifting between narrators and plot threads. I don’t claim to understand exactly what it’s about, but from what I know and from what I’ve seen in the trailer, it kind of reminds me of “Adaptation”, because it is a movie about making a movie about the character’s life story. “Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story” stars Steve Coogan and Gillian Anderson, and opens in limited release in North America on January 27, 2006.
