Howard Stern Satellite Show Won’t Beam To Canada
I have to admit I’m not really a big fan of Howard Stern, but I’m still pretty interested to see what effect his move to Sirius next year may have on the budding medium of satellite radio. I think there’s potential for some cool niche programming, but I’m still not convinced that people actually listen to the radio anymore. Especially with the internet providing limitless sources of streaming radio, podcasts and mp3s, all for free. It’s pretty tough to compete with that, not to mention every other form of entertainment out there right now. So anyways, now comes news that apparently Howard Stern’s show will not be available via satellite radio here in Canada. Strangely enough, where satellite radio offers shelter from broadcasting laws and regulations in the U.S., apparently it still falls under the federal legislation of the CRTC here in Canada. Which means the new “uncensored” Stern show probably wouldn’t last more than a few weeks in Canada before being pulled anyways (Stern’s first Canadian broadcast on regular FM radio alone drew over 1,000 complaints to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council). Stern seems to think that Canadian listeners can get around this roadblock by subscribing to Sirius with a U.S. address. I’m not sure how that would work exactly. Either way, I’m a little torn about this situation. On the one hand I want to think Canada is a very progressive and open-minded country and this might be a step backwards. On the other hand… it’s Howard Stern, who really cares??

I’m surprise Howard Stern is still a factor. I liked him when he first came out, then he just got annoying and predictiable.
In other words, the shock value has waned in my opinion….as it takes a lot to offend or surprise me anymore.
Posted by Bassmasta-Baychuk on November 20th, 2005I’ve been a subscriber to the US version of SIRIUS for the past year just for Howard’s move. I’ve looked into it and since I’m technically a US subscriber this won’t affect me and all will be well in my universe.
BTW Sean… I listen to this radio all the time. More than the iPod or CDs now. It’s fuckin’ fantastic.
Posted by Singe on November 20th, 2005What kind of programming is available on it exactly? See I think this can be awesome with the right content, but all I know about are Stern’s stations.
That settles it… Singe, you’ll have to come on our radio show to discuss satellite radio.
Posted by Sean on November 21st, 2005I can do that. I’ve been meaning to get out there for a while. This week isn’t good, let me know when you’ll be taping for next week.
