I will never forget how disappointed I was when I went to see this. I always expect Superman stories to be interesting things of him being the invincible man who can fly. I do think the first movie made back in 1978 was really good for its time. It is just outdated for today’s world. The following three sequels were real terrible. Each one got even worse than the one before. I sure wish they would do a brand new series starting all over. It needs to be done just like the Spider-Man movies. There should be a first one starting with an updated version of the origin and bringing in a powerful villain. Then it should have a few sequels bringing in an even more powerful villain each time. I will always believe “Superman Returns” was one of the worst comic book movies ever made.

OK, the superpower thing.. well… to be honest where did any of his superpowers come from??? the Sun..!!?? NO.. Superman was mearly a being from a planet with ultra High gravity with a dense molecular structure, the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound, faster than a speeding bullet and stronger than a locamotive. The original Superman couldn’t fly, didn’t have X-ray vision, didn’t have heat vision, telepath, wasn’t “bulletproof” didn’t look like a flaming homosexual (like this guy) and didn’t have superhearing. Nor did he have the power to look really gay in and out of costume.
Well, i personally think that the superman image has changed far too much.. Perhaps the blue tights should go completely and he should wear nothing but a speedo and a red tanktop with a nice hooded cape from Express for men in the next movie. (this movie is a fudgepacking great time I’m sure)

jay, i think you mischaracterize my problems with Superman on the show.

I consider Spiderman to be pretty light, and thats around what I expect with it. I expect a Superman movie to be bright and even well, cheery, with one liners.

I just think the Donner movie was too far over the top to the point where it was uninteresting. in a hero movie i want at least there to be SOME credible threat… whether it was how Luthor and his cronies stole the nuke or how they kidnapped Superman… i dont mind light, but that was too far for me, it was like 60s Batman mixed with a moderately modern hero movie, and i thought it was just stupid.

maybe if i actually saw it when i was little i’d think differently, but i saw it only last year, and I just hated it.

I guess we’ll see where this one goes. But I agree with Nuno in that the teaser trailer didn’t do a thing for me in the excitement or “Ooh, I want to see that” department.

In fact, I thought it was so bland that it makes me NOT want to go see it. So let’s hope the next trailer is a bit more snappy and interesting, otherwise I don’t see many people responding to it one bit.

I agree with Goon to an extent… Superman is a really tricky character to write for I think because he is so powerful. There’s a fine line between making him omnipotent, and giving him some weaknesses.

That said, Superman 1 and 2 RULE in my opinion

We are talking about Superman right? The guy who has superstrenght, heat vision, x-ray vision, cold breath, bullet proof AND flying abilities? The sixth sense is really what put it over the top?

i think the things that were most ridiculous with that first film were the “he knows where all his friends are and if they’re in trouble even though he’s halfway around the world…” – he flies to the gulf coast to stop nukes but then knows exactly where to find Lois trapped in the car?

I also can’t stand the original Superman movies. Even the first two are terrible. It’s not just the cheesy effects, it’s that everything is so campy and ridiculous. I’m a bit concerned that Singer claims to worship the first two Superman movies. I hope they handle this Lex Luthor a lot better than Hackman’s, who somehow pulled off cartoonish, nonsensical crimes and who constantly bragged about being the greatest criminal mastermind of the century in earshot of everyone.

Another pet peeve of mine is that they gave Superman every super power under the sun (on top of the many powers he should have), such as erasing Lois Lane’s memory with a kiss and the ability to magically throw an “S” shield from his chest that expanded and enveloped one of the Kryptonian criminals.

i dont think that Superman is inherently bad or cheesy, I quite like the animated incarnations of Superman and I could even bear Lois and Clark if I had to…
but the first Superman movie… god, the pace is terrible and its TOO cheesy… I’m not a hardcore comic fanboy but seeing Lex Luthor as, well, essentially a 60s Batman villain, didnt do anything for me.

Well I guess it’s a question of whether or not you dislike the character of Superman altogether or you just disliked those movies. I mean, I see big differences between Superman 1/2 and Superman 3/4. But I think Superman worked well as sort of a classic 80’s innocent superhero… it’s not really clear whether this kind of thing will hold up nowadays or if people will think it’s cheesy.

It’ll be interesting for me to see what I think of this movie, because (dont kill me) I hated the original Superman movies
