Comparing Gamers To Drug Addicts

An interesting study was conducted recently to delve into the nature of video games and their potential for addictiveness. Neuroscientist Sabine Grusser-Sinopoli used EEG to measure brain activity in hardcore gamers while showing them images from games, and found that they respond in the same way that compulsive gamblers and heroin addicts do to images of their respective vices. Her conclusion: video games are potentially addictive. We’ve already seen China take steps to curb the effects of game addiction by introducing an “anti-online game addiction system” that decreases a player’s effectiveness in the game after 3 hours. Will we see other countries introducing laws to prevent their citizens from becoming mindless game zombies? Besides, so what if people do want to spend every minute of their lives in a virtual world? Isn’t it their choice?
