Dark City Director’s Cut In The Works?

Double dip DVDs are pretty damn annoying, not to mention insulting to the consumer. It seems like every year studios sit down and look at whatever their top selling DVDs have been, and then look at how they can get fans of those movies to pay all over again. Every now and then, however, the process is forgiveable, particularly when there is new cut of a movie involved that has been reworked for the better. Such would seem to be the case with Alex Proyas and his beautiful sci-fi film noir classic “Dark City”. The rumour mill states that a director’s cut of this film is in the works, with the source of these rumours stemming from a confirmation that Roger Ebert has recorded another audio commentary track for the new version. Now you might wonder how this film could get any better than it already was. Well over at JoBlo.com, someone wrote in to describe what an early cut of the movie was like, before the studio came in and forced Proyas to pick up the pace. The writer compares the slower-paced style to Kubrick, and says Keifer Sutherland’s opening narration did not exist, among other things. Colour me curious, I would definitely like to see this so-called director’s cut, assuming it is indeed happening.
