Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better

Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have It So Much Better
(Domino)

Anyone who saw what happened to the Strokes in 2003 will be experiencing déjà vu with the release of Franz Ferdinand’s sophomore album. While not a bad record by any means, after putting out a fresh debut, we have a release that is for the most part, more of the same. The album thus far is still receiving good (but not as good) reviews, and dealing with a nasty, snippity backlash amongst elitist music nerds who are pissed off that their little secret are now a mainstream act. Tough luck.

At any rate, “You Could Have it So Much Better” is an enjoyable record, but I must confess that I am among those who think it isn’t as good as their debut. There are a few patches where songs run together, however the songs aren’t boring or bland in any sense. The album flies by at an alarming rate.

The highlights for the album are the unexpected moments. While I’m sure “Do You Want To” is more likely to sell records, what’s more likely to keep you playing it are the few detours into uncharted territory for this band, such as “Walk Away” and “Eleanor Put Your Boots On”. “Eleanor” is a fantastic track and one of the best songs of the year, period. Its a slow, acoustic and harmonica-driven ballad with dark lyrics about singer Alex Kapranos’ ill fated relationship with Eleanor Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces. The song suggests she climb to the hilt of a rollercoaster or the Statue of Liberty and take a dive, and a promise that he will be there when she lands. What makes it especially creepy is the very pleasant, unaggressive nature of the song.

Overall if you liked Franz Ferdinand’s debut you will probably enjoy this follow-up. Sure its not as unique, but how could it be with all the other bands like this that have popped up over the last year? — Goon
