Gavin Rossdale Teams Up With Helmet, Rival Schools

It seems that Gavin Rossdale has coasted long enough on the fame of being married to one Gwen Stefani, and now he wants the spotlight back. After finding little success with his acting career (did anyone know that he had a small role in Constantine? I didn’t), he has returned with a brand new band called Institute. The thing I found very strange about this project is that he is teaming up with ex-members of such respected bands as Orange 9mm, Helmet, Civ and Rival Schools. The band consists of guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Cache Tolman, and drummer Charlie Walker, but here’s the real kicker… their debut album “Distort Yourself” was produced by Helmet frontman Page Hamilton and from the sounds of it, Page was intimately involved in the songwriting. So what does it mean? Has Gavin Rossdale gone completely hard-edged and heavy? Well… not really. I sampled a few tracks from Distort Yourself via XFM and it still sounded pretty terrible. I guess credible collaborators still can’t necessarily buy you good music.

  1. I thought you saw Constantine? he didnt have a small part. He was the 2nd main villian behind Peter Stormare as Satan. he was Balthazar the corporate guy. he was bad/good in that movie.

  2. I saw it… didn’t even notice it was him. I don’t know if that’s good or bad.

  3. i guess it means he was good enough to fit in among other mediocre actors.

  4. Hey I hung out with Helmet in NYC all week and Page Hamilton has produced the new Institute record. He feels that it is really going to take off and Chris from Helmet is touring with them. Page Hamilton is the nicest fucking guy and he can still rock out. I saw them at CBGBS last night and they were just taking requests and playing whatever anyone wanted to hear. It was Stellar. Tick was amazing.

  5. Sorry,
but to also comment yeah the band Institute I don’t mind but I bet they’ll hit it with the masses. To under credit Helmet a bit as well the band that they were touring with who the said they liked were one of the worst bands I have ever heard. I can’t even remember what they’re name was because I really hope I never hear them again.
