Calling All Flight Attendants… Boycott Flightplan
There’s nothing like a little controversy to generate press for a movie that needs a help at the box office. Not that I think this so-called boycott of the movie Flightplan that The Association of Professional Flight Attendants is calling for is actually some reverse psychology marketing ploy. I’m sure some flight attendants really were offended by the portrayal of their profession in this movie, as ridiculous as that sounds. All I’m saying is, why even bother? Given the movie’s supposedly horrible twist ending and the power of word of mouth, people have probably already started a boycott of this movie for their own reasons. Whether or not a flight crew will get the support of their passengers in the event of another 9/11 will likely have very little to do with this movie.

I just think the whole thing is rediculous. Boycotting the movie because the flight staff isn’t portrayed that well? What’s next? Are cops going to boycott every movie with a bad cop in it? Is the military going to boycott movies where the villain is a general with a vendetta? Should taxi drivers boycott a movie where they’re portrayed rudely, or as criminals, or with bad driving habits? No, none of it makes sense. All of these things are elements of the story line, progressing the plot towards a climax. They aren’t stereotypes, they aren’t supposed to represent to people what this profession is. Every villain in a movie has to be something (whether it’s a particular job, race, religion, color, etc.) but it’s stupid for those people who also belong to that group to feel like its an attack against them.

And the fact that they bring up the 9/11 thing… I mean, come on, is anyone ever going to move on from that? I’m sure it still freaks out anyone involved in the airline industry but really, I don’t think people are going to disrespect flight attendants because of this movie, especially not in a crisis.
