Elfman vs. Raimi

Speaking of musicians turned composers, Danny Elfman is probably the best example with his successful transition from 80’s new wave band Oingo Boingo to Tim Burton’s right-hand man and one of the best known modern film composers. The Elfman/Raimi relationship began on the film Darkman and continued with Army Of Darkness (a score which was actually composed by Joseph LoDuca but featured the “March of the Dead” theme by Elfman), A Simple Plan, and finally Spider-Man 1&2. Well, with great power comes great responsibility, and according to a recent interview with IESB.net, Elfman will not be responsible for the score of Spider-Man 3 and ‘couldn’t care less’ who will replace him. This news has shocked fanboys around the world, and just when things couldn’t get any worse, About.com brings us an interview with Elfman during the press junket for Tim Burton’s ‘Corpse Bride’, expanding on the apparent falling out: “I’m not working on Spider-Man 3. I’m out of that. I won’t miss not doing it. Spider-Man 2 was a miserable experience” Elfman continued on with what seems to be a personal falling out with Raimi: “It’s like my connection with Sam got completely severed. As far as I’m concerned, he went to sleep, somebody put a pod next to him and when he awoke, he wasn’t the same person I’d known for a decade. He went from right there number two on my list of favorite directors to the exact opposite of what I look for in a film experience… I’d rather go back to waiting tables than to do Spider-Man 2 again, to have to have the same experience” OUCH. Well fans of Elfman’s work on the film will be pleased to know that Raimi owns the copyright to the actual Spider-Man theme, so not much will change there. Fans of Elfman will be pleased (or displeased?) to know that he’s opted for Charlotte’s Web as his next project.

If you ask me Elfman is a crybaby. All his scores sound the same anyways! I assume “number one” on his list of favourite directors is still Burton?

  3. Yeah, but even him and Tim Burton had a short falling out, which is why he didn’t do the score for Ed Wood.
