Peter Weir To Direct William Gibson’s “Pattern Recognition”
I consider myself a minor fan of William Gibson’s work — no self-respecting geek can truly disavow the godfather of cyberspace — but I have to admit that aside from his high-tech writing style, some of his books have been a little too cryptic for me. However, I’ve always been especially interested in film adaptations of his stories because seeing someone’s visual interpretation of his writing is intriguing to say the least. Unfortunately, when it comes to movies, Gibson has thus far had some bad luck… both “Johnny Mnemonic” and “New Rose Hotel” were pretty weak, if not downright horrible. Now finally a quality director has gotten his hands on Gibson’s latest novel, “Pattern Recognition”, and is looking to adapt it for the big screen. Peter Weir (Master & Commander, The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) has signed on to direct and the movie is currently listed as his next project after “War Magician”. Writer David Arata (Brokedown Palace, Spy Game) has been hired on to do the screenplay. Interesting that this is also Gibson’s first book that takes place in the present day. Here’s to hoping this one doesn’t suck.

A long-standing reader of Gibson’s work and with pattern Recognition being a true favorite, I am thrilled to learn of peter Weir’s being the Director of the adaptation. His work with “Master & Commander’ attest to his being sensitive to the original vision, text and themes. I can hardly wait until the release.
