German Lord Of The Rings Spoof Out On DVD

You had to assume this would happen eventually, but I’m glad to see that some German filmmakers pulled it off before any Hollywood studio was able to get the Wayans Brothers involved. I’m talking about a full blown Lord Of The Rings spoof. Most fan films and spoofs are lame enough (Spaceballs is an exception!), but when you are watching it in a foreign language with potentially strange cultural in-jokes, well suddenly it becomes so unfunny that it’s hilarious! Check out the trailer for this German movie “The Ring Thing”, which has apparently been out on DVD since April. I wish I could tell you more but the only English words on the site are “Shit happens”.

  1. ach de liebers….

LOTR is actually one of those rare cases that a full blown parody could work. LOTR has some humor, but it is humorless enough to really point out how ridiculous it can be. The MTV awards spoof was gold, maybe someone (NOT THE WAYANS) could do something with it in the future…

I cant believe anyone in their right mind actually reads those Harry Potter and LOTR spoofs in book form though.

btw, I dont know if I would have found Spaceballs funny had I been able to have seen it when it had first come out in theaters… it probably would have felt as much as a cash-in as a LOTR parody would be right now.. I think you need some distance in between a movie and a parody for the actual parody to be done right. this even goes for movie references, like on the Simpsons… all their nods to Citizen Kane, Indiana Jones and stuff are cool…

but when they did Requiem for a Dream, Run Lola Run, etc, even Pulp Fiction, at the time it felt like it was too soon.

  2. Finally! A LOTR adaption with plenty of elf T&A, just as Tolien had intended.

  3. Damn my finger! I meant, “Just as Tolkien had intended.”

  4. Well spaceballs didn’t come out until 1987, so that’s a ten year gap between the spoof and the original. I saw it at the drive in when it came out, and it was funny. But i was eight. At that point shitting your pants was funny. Wait..that’s still funny.

  5. Hey man… shit happens.

  6. Just to let you know: it is a swiss and not a german movie.
