Indie Record Labels Form Trade Group
As we all know, most of the music industry is now controlled by 4 major corporations (Universal, Warner Music, Sony BMG, EMI) and it’s not an easy task for independent labels to get their stuff in stores and noticed by the average music consumer. In order to gain a better foothold in the marketplace, 125 independent record labels have all joined forces to form the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM). This trade group is similar to the British “Association of Independent Music”, which successfully boycotted iTunes in Europe in order to get them to change their pricing plan to accomodate indie labels fairly. It will be interesting to see what comes of this, but I definitely think it will be good for music in general. (Thanks to Roman for the heads up on this one!)
