“Murderball”: A Documentary About Wheelchair Rugby

I’m sure we’ve all seen sports like basketball and hockey being played at the Special Olympics at some point, and wondered how the hell they manage to pull it off. But man, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen people in wheelchairs playing rugby. Dubbed “Murderball”, the sport is brutal and unforgiving, with athletes slamming into each other on specially modified wheelchairs and showing no mercy whatsoever. A documentary that has been playing at various festivals this year (including Toronto’s Hot Docs fest) follows two of the most powerful teams in the sport, Team USA and Team Canada, as they vye for the gold medal at the 2004 Athens games. Directed by Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro, the movie has been been getting rave reviews and was recently picked up by Think Film for distribution.
