  1. you guys think way too much about the Star Wars movie… generally I think more than anything, the proper way to review Star Wars movies is as a visceral experience.

anyways, I was very very entertained, and it was sustainable through its entire running time

because of this: ROTS is actually my favorite of the 6. And Hayden only had 2 scenes where it was bad and it was mainly the stilted dialogue that really caused that. I think many people are going to be a little too scared to give this movie the credit it deserves. One person we know left the theater saying how much he hated it, yet he’s going to see it again sometime this weekend.

Ewen McGregor in particular did an amazing job.
Despite us knowing what would basically happen, this movie wasnt really all that predictable. There are surprises and true ‘holy shit’ moments. The action sequences were well constructed, and while over the top so many times, never to the point of pure cheesiness like other movies. Definitely easier to swallow than so many Indiana Jones moments. There were many iconic shots in the movie, it had better pacing than any of the original trilogy, the score was better used than of all the other films, it had just the right amount of funny moments. the movie is payoff after payoff: all the duels you wanted to see and for the first time of all the movies i was intrigued throughout all the fighting, because they kept it moving through numerous setpieces and with other factors coming into play other than skill. and frankly, they made Vader way more badass than he’s ever been. the entire film, and not just because of events, is dark. its still colorful, but it is nowhere near as cartoony as Eps 1 and 2.

the only downsides for me are the dialogue in several scenes. after Ep 2 I was totally prepped for any cheese between padme and anakin so they never actually made me cringe. and so much dialogue is expository as this is mostly an action movie that i dont see why anyone should bother to complain about it.

4 out of 4 stars for me.

  2. one other thing: the whole series is full of wholes and things that are scientifically impossible. describing how light sabres work in and of themselves for example, but we’re worried about if ships could really have put out the fire that quickly?

i mean like in LOTR theres the ultimate armor that Frodo wears that keeps him from being killed by the Cave Troll… so he didnt get punctured, but what about the force of the press?

there are some things you just cant worry about. instead of nitpicking the little things, we should be praising the other little things that work:
for example – how Grievous coughs because of what Mace Windu does to him in teh Clone Wars animated series…

the subtle suggestions from Palpatine that he was the one who killed that ultimate Sith, that he was the apprentice. Also, the hinting that Palpatine may have actually created Anakin himself! Anakins mom said he had no father, and i forget who but one of the Jedi says he might have been made by midichlorians. and in ROTS, Palpatine says he learned how to make midichlorians create life…

  3. George Lucas needs work on his “romance” writing. Maybe he should just have called in a woman to write the dialogue for those scenes. lol

  4. um. higher bitrate for the songs, guys. esp. when you’re playing good groups (i.e. not Deerhoof)

  5. Hey Snorf, I’ve been thinking about making the MP3s higher bitrate but we’ve been having a hard time keeping the running time down and that would make a pretty huge file. I’ll see what I can do. We won’t stop playing Deerhoof though!

Goon, I will readily admit that the details I was nitpicking about are stupid, but the way I look at it is… if I really cared about what was going on in the movie, I wouldn’t have noticed them. The first half of the movie for me still had just as many painful moments as Episode II. (BTW, my point was that there is no way you can shoot a jet of water directly across at something as you are flying at high speeds… not that the fire was put out so quickly. Come on man, get it straight!)

  6. Deerhoof uber alles

actually, I thought the first half hour of RotS is the best action sequence of the entire series…

basically, I sit back and think of
    a) how much I was entertained vs. the other movies, and how many times I was bored bs. the other series
    b) think of all the things I liked vs. the number of things I hated… I could make a list of hundreds of things I liked and around 4-5 things I didnt like.

I like the original trilogy, and dont really care about the acting being ‘bad’ or the effects not being as good as they are today… but those movies, especially episode IV, are too slow.

anyways, fire water. big deal. When Neo is flying at a gazillion miles an hour to catch trinity, her ribs would be destroyed at the force in which he catches her. But thats not why the Matrix Reloaded really sucked.

in Superman he’s able to save every goddamn thing without anyone letting him know where to look or what was going on. He needs Luther to spell out to him his entire plan and that Nukes are already deployed, but somehow he can know Jimmy Olsens about to get crushed by rocks all the way from San Francisco? But thats not why I generally find that movie ridiculously stupid.

my point is, in sci-fi/action movies little dumb details arent to be worried about so much. its more about the bigger picture, and in the bigger picture I didnt get across why you didnt care about what was going on in the movie for the first half. Did you not care about the characters? Because for me, I thought Ewen has been a rock as obi-wan throughout all the prequels, we had Grievous, Dooku and Palpatine all being cool at once, and R2 was better used as both being worried about during action scenes and as being cool than anywhere else in the series.

  7. Goon, your assessment of Star Wars is bang-on. You mentioned everything that I would have said about this movie. Nicely stated! As for scientific improbabilities… Senseless to discuss they are.

  8. ROTS is definitely the best of the prequels but that is saying much. It’s still flawed but at least I was entertained for the most part. Other than the flashy, over-the-top and often times fake looking CGI, what most bothered me about ROTS is the stupid cartoony crap like the battle droid voices and horrendous dialogue. There were absolutely no surprises to the plot and it was simply a matter of bridging the two trilogies. Anyone could have done as good if not better job at filling in the blanks.

The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy used CGI for humans, humanoids and creatures as well but managed to use it so convincing that at times you can’t even tell where CG was used. Weta Digital has handed ILM its ass and it doesn’t look like ILM is even trying to fight back.

  9. I meant to type “ROTS is definitely the best of the prequels but that ISN’T saying much.”
