Trailer Park Boys Movie In The Works

Last week it was announced that the Showcase comedy series Trailer Park Boys will become one of only a few Canadian television shows to ever have a feature film based on it. As mentioned in the CBC article linked below, it will join the revered ranks of such shows as The Kids In The Hall, SCTV and The Red Green Show. Unfortunately, I think all of their movies were commercial duds. Coming in the summer of 2006, Trailer Park Boys: The Movie will be directed by series creator Mike Clattenburg, but executive produced by Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Clattenburg promises the same lo-fi feel of the series, despite the movie’s 5 million dollar budget. Let me guess, it will involve a road trip of some kind, right? I’m sure this is yet another film we don’t really need.

  1. Who ever wrote that article is one messed up child…
Trailer Park Boys are the best thing that came to television and i cant wait for the movie and I bet millions of people would agree with me

  2. Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy is underrated….

anyways – I dont know who Trailer park Boys appeals to. i just dont get it, i dont find it funny, but in theory the show could have been good. it all comes down to the acting. That guy who plays Bubbles is fine, but everyone else – shit.

I find a big problem with Canadian shows is Canadian actors have a tendency to act so disconnected to their characters, they’re more CARICATURES, everything is done with a wink and a nudge like “LOOK AT ME ACTING. I’M A QUIRKY CHARACTER. QUIRKY SHOWS GET GOOD REVIEWS, LOOK AT US WE’RE “CORNER GAS” – EVERYONE IS QUIRKY THEREFORE SHOW IS GOOD!”
its just way too stagey, they forget they’re on a camera and not in front of an audience, they play everyone so fucking broad…

none of those people, except maybe Brent Butt, really become who they are. Compare this to Arrested Development where they’re quirky and unrealistic, but theres a real investment in the characters by the actors. I’d say maybe of all of them David Cross acts the most ‘canadian acting’ with his character, but considering he’s supposed to be the most wacky insane-o, and the others are so leveled, it works.

and you see all this types of acting in all these Canadian shows. Even the sketch shows dont become the people they’re parodying like they should. Air Farce, Jessica Holmes, Comedy Inc = crap

Now the people on 22 Minutes – I dont really find the show funny, but Mary Walsh, the girl who harasses the politicians dressed like Xena – she knows what she’s doing. She becomes that character deeply and fully, and I respect her for that…

  3. oh yeah, one other thing

Theres one essential element missing from almost all Canadian shows these days

    COMIC TIMING AND DELIVERY

some shows actually have had good writing, but the timing of the one liners and punchlines kill everything. Bob Odenkirk can make everything he says funny just by the way he speaks, varied intonations, etc…. Canadian actors sound like they’re reading from the page, as if the writing itself should provide laughs.

  4. trialer park boys is the most bitchinist show on tv and i’m sure the movie will kick some ass.
    oi goon smokes lets go

  5. TPB IS AWESOME IF U DONT GET IT U ARE TOO UPTIGHT IT HAS TO BE ONE OF TEH MOST ADDICTIVE, FUNNIEST SHOWS EVER IT IS JUST CRACKING. WE NEED THE MOVIE AND MANY MORE SERIES.

  6. knock knock goon.

  7. knock knock?
what am i supposed to debate? the only argument in response has been ‘TPB rules’ – you want me to respond try giving me something to respond to. I’m a reactionary guy but you gotta give me a little more than that.

  8. Yeah sure Trailer Park Boys isn’t for everyone and fans should probably respect that,but i am a fan- and i realize some of the actors may be stiff(In particular-Jullian, but he is the straight man i guess) but i’d have to disagree that mike smith-Bubbles is the only talent on that show;
When there’s Jim Lahey(John Dunsworth) to contend with-who is possibly the most convincing drunk and tragic character(E.G. See “Propane Propane” or “Workin’ Man
    “)living in the trailer park.
And the jokes are spot on almost all the time-if it wasn’t a good show it wouldn’t of been as successfull as it is in Ireland & England.

Also a lot of the characters had never acted before they were on trailer park boys-

i think it can appeal to alot of people-despite the cursing and dope growing etc. and their general lifestyle.

there’s is a strong theme of friends and family which is nice!

    jonathan torrens is great too!

  9. i dont think success in Britain really means anything. i actually find a lot of the modern British shows that are successful to be just as bad as your average American sitcom. Sure theres the Office, and classics like the Young Ones, Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, but there was all this stink about Little Britain, and i rented it, and its got to be the worst sketch comedy ever. its worse than MADTv even…

  10. Yeah Little Britain Is well overrated-it’s wierd the way it had this huge following there-frankly it didn’t deserve it, and it ripped of The League of Gentlemen
good british shows of recent times:
    Fr. Ted(Which is Irish!)
    Spaced-(2 Series)
    I’m Alan Partridge
    Office
    League of Gentlemen(1st 2 series)
Theres prob more but there the ones that stick

  11. Goon;

You are taking it all to seriously thats why you dont get it, it’s TV not real life it doesnt have to make sense thats why its canadian cause in the back of you head you know someone has probably actually done this stuff or something loosely like it and that also makes it interesting, i have actually heard people think tpb is real now thats talent i think to acomplish that kind of view. Sorry theres no blood or gore or a sexy teenage blond showing her titts every ten minutes like americans are used to but “thats the way it goes”

  12. i dont take it seriously at all. thats part of the problem, they dont either. theres so little care put into this show, why should I give a crap?

you say ‘its not real life it doesnt have to make sense’ and then say that so many people think its real. so which is it?

i never thought it was real for one second because its so poorly acted, so staged, that it plays like a local cable production. I dont need to think its real, but I do need to think its funny. theres a zillion shows/movies out there now that are ‘fake documentary style’, and TPB is at the bottom rung. Have you seen any of Christopher Guest’s films, or Spinal Tap, Blair With Project, or even something like Drop Dead Gorgeous? even a really crappy fake documentary like “On Edge” was more watchable than a typical TPB episode. I’ve seen the show, my dad has one of the seasons… he also has one of the worst tastes in anything i’ve ever seen, he loves Air Farce and Rick Mercer, and he was a big Beachcombers fan back in the day.
Canadian shows by and large fail at humor because its all done with way too much of a wink and a nod, and the production values are always way too poor. TPB is no exception.

Spacejunk isnt run by Americans, btw. We’re Canadian, and blood gore and tits arent a prerequisite for us to like anything. it would help though if a comedy show was you know… actually funny.

give me an example of something you thought was funny on TPB. explain the joke to me, if it can be so easily defended.

  13. PS – if Jay’s reading, since he also trashed TPB and mentioned Corner Gas in his latest post… Corner Gas is better than TPB, but its not funny either. Bad typically Canadian disconnected acting, never really becoming the character. Brent Butt has some charisma but overall that show is trying to be a Northern Exposure type quirky without ever actually going for it.

  14. Tpb is the best fucking thing a have ever seen on tv, i love that shit

  15. TPB’s rules!!! cant wait for the movie.everyone i know loves to smoke up and laugh our asses off

  16. Goon – you need to pull your head out of your ass. lighten up a little its just a TV show, get out and go for a walk for the 1/2 hour its on or something, no one is forcing you to watch it are they?? Cause no one really cares if you like TPB or not, keep your invaluable opinions to yourself, you obviously don’t understand Canadian humour, cause you’re a lime or yank or whatever.

  17. “you obviously don’t understand Canadian humour, cause you’re a lime or yank or whatever.”

I’m Canadian.if you actually read my posts you’d have seen that.. sounds to me the one who can’t read what the other person wrote is more likely to have ones head up his ass now wouldnt it?

    bottom line:
    mediocre writing
poor production values, and i mean that even by fake documentary standards
    atrociously bad timing

this is what modern Canadian programming is – they dont put any effort or money behind it, yet promote the shit out of it hoping against hope it’ll catch on. Kenny vs. Spenny and the Tom Green Show succeeded because they didnt require those production values to make a good show, and the brains behind the show also edited it and made it their own, rather than almost every other Canadian show which is basically thrown to amateurs to handle.

  18. TPB is fantastic, and if you dont get it, well then i guess you just dont get it! i feel for you goon!

let me give you an example. In my opinion three of the best aspects of TPB are (…and i quote…)

    “mediocre writing.
poor production values, and i mean that even by fake documentary standards.
    atrociously bad timing.”

All this equels a bloody funny show!!!You either get this or you dont, but dont hurt yourself trying to understand it mate, relax!
