What’s up with The O.C.? The trendiest, hippest show on TV has made it their goal to feature up and coming indie rock acts, to the point where you have to wonder, how exactly is this benefitting them? With performances on past episodes by The Walkmen, The Killers and Modest Mouse, and even a song from Stars on last week’s episode, it’s clear that someone from the show is an avid reader of Pitchfork Media. The track listing for the upcoming compilation, Music from The O.C.: Mix 4, is a veritable who’s who of underground indie rock superstars. Beck, The Futureheads, Sufjan Stevens, Modest Mouse, Pinback, Matt Pond PA… the list goes on. So does this make The O.C. cool to the mainstream because they’re on the cutting edge of music that’s about to hit it big? Or does it simply help garner them a hipster following of indie rock nerds?
