77th Annual Academy Awards Nominees Announced

And the nominees are in… no real surprises this year. The Aviator leads the pack with 11 nominations, but both Finding Neverland and Million Dollar Baby also had 7 each. Alexander Payne’s Sideways got nominated for both best picture and best director, which is nice to see. Clint Eastwood got a nod for both best actor and best director. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind received only 2 nominations (not a big surprise here either)… one for Kate Winslet as Best Actress and one for best original screenplay. Cool to see that The Incredibles also got a nomination for best screenplay. Jamie Foxx got nominated for his roles in both Collateral and Ray, although he probably won’t win either of them. Chris Rock is gonna be pissed!

  1. Most of these are pretty predictable. Eternal Sunshine is definitely one of the best movies of last year and while it sucks that it only got two nominations, at least it wasn’t completely overlooked. BTW, some of these nominations don’t really fit into the proper categories. If Jamie Foxx’s role in Collateral is considered a supporting role (he’s the freakin’ main character with the most screen time!), then how is Kate Winslet a Best Actress when she’s clearly a supporting character in ESOTSM?

Very cool that The Incredibles and Brad Bird got props. Shrek 2 better not win. I hate that the Best Animated Feature Film category encompasses every animated movie that comes out instead of recognizing only the ones that are exceptional. I’m pretty sure that Shark Tale was a critical and financial flop. It really demeans the great animated films that are nominated.

  2. The whole Best Animated Feature category doesn’t really make sense because “animated” is not a genre but rather a medium. Now granted, most movies that they nominate in the category are primarily kid’s movies but there’s no reason why an animated movie couldn’t theoretically compete with live action movies for Best Picture. As we see more adult-oriented animated films come out, I’m sure this will change eventually. Animation still doesn’t get the respect it deserves. I wonder if 10 or 20 years down the road the Oscars will include video games and interactive entertainment as well…

  3. For anyone interested, i will be holding an Oscar Pool as a fundraiser for my Time Travel documentary. We will be arranging sweet prizes. More info to come. If you’re interested, leave a message or email jcheel@vaxxine.com.

  4. Isn’t there an animated short catagory? where is that listed?

  6. Hey Nuno, the director gets to pick who is supporting and leading and 99 times out of 100 he’ll let the actor choose for themselves, ie. Anthony Hopkins as a leading role when he has about 20 minutes of screen time in Silence of the Lambs. So if Jamie thought he was going to get nominated for Collateral he would probably not want to say that he was the lead when he’s next to Mr. Cruise.
