September Tapes: Bin Laden Meets Blair Witch Project
Coming to DVD on January 25th, 2005 is an odd movie called September Tapes that walks the line between fact and fiction. The story behind the movie is that documentary filmmaker Don Larson went to Afghanistan in 2002 during the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Larson disappeared a month later near the Pakistani border and 8 tapes of his footage were recovered shortly thereafter. This movie is supposed to be constructed from the actual footage that he shot. The actual truth behind this movie is that Don Larson is a fictional person, and most of the movie was scripted. However, the film was actually shot in Afghanistan during the hunt for Bin Laden and the locals and actual Taliban members in it are not acting as they believed that a real documentary was being created. Scenes of actual military combat were not staged. Apparently the U.S. Department of Defense also seized part of the footage as it posed a threat to national security. Innovative idea or just plain confusing? I’m not sure but my curiosity is piqued. Check out the trailer, production notes and other info at the website below.
