Keane – Hopes And Fears
Keane – Hopes And Fears
(Interscope)
British music fans have a notorious reputation for being fickle (as do Canadians, come to think of it), and as a result you never quite know what you’re going to get when a band is touted as the “next big thing” in the U.K. They could be one hit wonders just as easily as they could a talented band who actually deserve the attention. Other times you just find yourself trying to understand what all the fuss is about. Keane are apparently the latest and greatest sensation overseas, and my immediate reaction upon hearing their debut album “Hopes And Fears” is that for once I completely understand what all the fuss is about.
Keane are a three-piece pop-rock band who do not have a guitarist in the line-up, which in itself is a refreshing change. The songs are primarily piano-based, and I’ve always had a soft spot for catchy indie rock songs that make good use of piano or keyboards. Even with the lack of guitars, the sound is full and vibrant, maintaining an air of sweet melancholy throughout but without ever becoming overly sad or sombre. My only reference point for a band like this is Ben Folds. Despite comparisons to Coldplay and Radiohead, I don’t really see similarities with either band. Lead singer Tom Chaplin’s soaring vocals could be faintly reminiscent of Thom Yorke, but he doesn’t quite reach the same creepy high notes and remains a little more calm and focused. His voice is delicate but powerful, and is clearly the central force behind the music. Check out the range he shows on “She Has No Time” or “Sunshine”.
“Somewhere Only We Know” is the hit single and lead-off track, and it immediately sets the stage for what is to follow. Melodic pop hooks and sensitive lyrics, catchy choruses and just plain accessible music. While this might not be a CD that sets everyone off, it is something you can be sure will not offend too many ears. By the end of the disc you do kind of wish that they would let loose a little, but this is a perfect example of mood music. Hopes And Fears is a disc you’ll throw on when you just want something soothing and relaxing that won’t necessarily put you to sleep.
As for whether or not Keane will still be around a year from now, I can’t say. The songs certainly don’t demand your attention or grab you forcefully by the goodies and nowadays you really have to shout to be heard. On the other hand, maybe that’s exactly what Keane will be remembered for — writing captivating pop songs that please but never overstay their welcome. — Sean

Ive just bought hopes and fears and its probably the best music ive heard all year! I absolutly love it! The first song ‘Somewhere only we know’ is probably the best song on the cd yet the rest are just as good. Ive just been to bruges with my school for a music tour and this cd got everyone singing on the coach. Love u Tom Chaplin! Hes so fit with a very sexy voice! And looks like my science teacher which is a plus, hey S.B
Posted by Sandra A frm 10Lk on July 19th, 2004I am a huge Keane fan and have been for around a year. I live in Northampton, England and was very lucky to see the band 2 weeks before Hopes and Fears was released here and before all the hype!! For once please beleive the Enlglish reviews and i totally agree that the average English music fan is fickle but these are the real deal!!! Bedshaped is about to be released over here as a single and is my favorite song on the album. BUY IT NOW……you wont be disapointed.
Posted by Simon Cullis on July 19th, 2004Keane rule.
Fickle? How about you Yanks just cant understand the raw energy behind what are some of the most innovative bands of today. Bands such as Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and Turin Breaks are truly ground breaking, but you just wont give them the time of day beacuse you simply dont understand it and it’s not as glossy ‘a’ recording as many of your completely over produced rubbish.
Now it seems a little unfair for me to totally sweep every band to have originated from the US, because you do have the odd band who redeems your musical status. Emphasis on the odd! Bands such as counting crows, oh dear im struggling, Umm, yeah thats about it!
Keane rule. And us Btits aren’t having it any other way!!
Listen and learn
Posted by James on July 19th, 2004I’m from the UK and only discovered Keane early this year but i love them and the music. Hopes & Fears is the best album i have heard for ages, i love every track on it but my favourite has to be TITLT. For any one who hasn’t already, listen to Snowed Under , another of my favourites (especially played live).
Posted by Sandra G on July 19th, 2004Brilliant songs, brilliant music and gorgeous guys. What more can i say.
Sandra youve just reminded me to dig out my copy of Somewhere Only We Know, the single has Snowed Under on it!!!! Nice one. Uk music rules….America.listen & learn!!!
Posted by Simon Cullis on July 20th, 2004is the best group i have ever heard in my life .i m from lima peru ,but when a i heard the song everybodys changing i thought was a song similiar to electronic group but after i heard the same voice in other relax song ,was great .the best group i heard.thanks
Posted by sandra lopez on July 20th, 2004Hey James, we are based in Canada, not the U.S. which is why I commented that Canadians are also fickle.
Incidentally I won’t dispute your claim that American music is overproduced rubbish, however I can’t say I agree that the Counting Crows are the height of American musical accomplishment over the years.
Posted by Sean on July 20th, 2004I am a Yank that listens to Virgin UK radio on the internet and am married to a british man. Thank god for the UK and their music. Keane amoung Snow Patrol and Oasis are my favorite bands. This Keane album is great, I love the melodies as well as the lyrics. I hope they will be around for along time. In the mean time I am trying to turn my yanky friends on to good music. Cheers UK. Mrs. Mongie
Posted by kelly on July 22nd, 2004Dump your husband and marry me Mrs Mongie……
Posted by Simon Cullis on July 26th, 2004I’m french and keane has just arrived on french radio station.I love this sound, melodies, voice ( sublime! how can he do that “she has no time” ?). Continuez comme ça!sorry for my bad english.merci encore pour ces chançons formidables, ces mélodies si harmonieuses, cette voie et ces paroles si justes.
Posted by amélie on July 30th, 2004I don’t think Keane can be compared to any band or sound that is currently out there, they are incomparable! Every song has such an intertwining sound and melody that I don’t believe there is any vocalist who can match the way Tom Chaplin’s voice fits so perfectly. Listening to their music sends you to another world. I can’t wait until the return to the US on tour. 9/29/2004 see you in New York.
Posted by matt on August 2nd, 2004keane just got trashed on pitchfork… are they that divisive?
Posted by Goon on August 9th, 2004I have to agree that Keane is one of the best bands out there everytime I hear Tom Chaplin sing i get goose bumps. He is talented as is the rest of the band I can’t wait to see the in Washington D.C. I have never listened to an album and liked every track like i do on this CD i can’t wait to hear more from Keane.
Posted by Cherie on August 10th, 2004i’m an asian and i love keane’s music.it’s catchy with trails of anguish with the reality of the pains in life.they play very nice music perfect when you’re alone.
Posted by wetfloor99 on August 18th, 2004I think that keane doesn´t grab your attention only when you have wax on your ears, but if you have them clean you can appreciate the magnificient sound that they create. It is an amazing band.It reminds me a bit of TRAVIS( great band as well),but their vocal is better under my point of view.Their music really takes me to the places I dream. They create a particular universe, and that is essential for becoming great artists.I wish them my best.
Posted by Luis(spain) on August 20th, 2004Tom Chaplin is so hot that he could melt the polar ice caps if he sat on them! His voice is exceptional and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end when I hear it. Tim Rice- Oxley is damn fine! I love the way he plays the piano. Richard Hughes is a fantastic drummer. I wish I could play the drums as well as he can. I wish that everyone would stop comparing Keane to Travis or Coldplay because, even though these bands are fabulous, Keane are in a league of their own. They have their own unique and fresh sound, which is completely different to the likes of Travis and Coldplay. Keane ROCK!
Posted by Lauren French on August 21st, 2004hi i am a very big fan of keane and ive got to say that tom chaplin must be the most good looking guy on the planet. Anyway back to the music its so good i listen to the album everyday because it puts a big smile on my face. my favourite song is one on the single thats just been relesed over here in the uk its called something in me was dying its very good and when this single gets relesed anywhere BUY IT STRAIGHT AWAY because you will miss out if you dont
Posted by emily on August 21st, 2004I like all the cd and also their famous hit “somewhere only we know” I don’t why it’s so difficult to known something about them here near Paris, but the radio RTL 2 program their Hit and the cd was “nice price ” and I discovered a real new talent at soon ….
Posted by Jean-Pascal on August 29th, 2004I’m in Seattle and we are definitely listening and learning! I have yet to hear Keane on the radio, I’ve seen them only on VH1 and immediately bought every CD and CD single I could find on the Internet. I am just obsessed with Tom Chaplin’s brilliant voice – not to mention everything else about the songs. They’re doing a show at the Showbox downtown next week and I am heartbroken that I can’t make it! I hope they come back to the US soon. As it stands, I can’t take Hopes & Fears out of my CD player for any length of time, and I’m still waiting for the imports I ordered with all the B-sides that aren’t on the album. I actually dream the songs! In the mean time, I’m telling everyone I know about them to help spread the word. People will get it eventually… or else!
Posted by Jennifer on September 1st, 2004Hey, I’m from Trinidad. Just got Hopes & Fears, that S*#T is hott “GO BUY IT!” The music the vocals… hott, hott, hott!!!! Wish I could see these dudes live!!!
Posted by Marlon on September 15th, 2004When I heard “Everybody’s Changing” on MTV I said who is this band? it made the hair back of my neck stand. The voice is so melancholy and so perfect and right for the song. I have never heard such a nice and searing voice. And so I bought the Album H&F to my surprice all the tracks contained in it are just great. No songs are boring, all are great. I should say KEANE rules!
Posted by ariel on September 29th, 2004Congratulations on being shortlisted for the Mercury prize – you should have won!!
Posted by Louise on October 4th, 2004Just like to say, Tom, I love your vocals! – you have the clarity, the sweetness, and the strength that remind me of Freddie Mercury, Billy McKenzie, Brian Wilson and Midge Ure ( hope you aren’t insulted … it’s meant to be a compliment!).I think all the all the songs on Hopes and Fears are wonderful- I have to stop my self from playing the album all the time! I bet you could do a great cover of Ultravox’s Hymn or Dancing with tears in my eyes?!
well, everybody says KEANE sounds like Coldplay or Travis. But I can’t say the same. You know, nobody can makes me fall in love except Tom Chaplin. Tom Chaplin I LOVE YOU! I know KEANE never went here. I live in Indonesia! One thing I know, Tom’s voice like an angel! For me of coure. I love Tom Chaplin! Well, I love Keane too. Everyday I pray and dream, someday I will meet Tom and his band! Hope it can be true. Once again, I love You Tom Chaplin!
Posted by winda on October 16th, 2004fantastic album as previous only album i have liked all tracks. like in Uk and just come back from seeing them live in concert at the appollo in manchester . perfect . band sound just like on cd, voice amazing . tim on keyboeard must see to be belived how much he gets into the music. . effortless singing, an exeptional concert. would love to go again . some new tracks sung tonight, even better than on hopes and fears.
Posted by sue g on October 30th, 2004Went to see them again last night. this time at Birmingham Carling Academy……awsum!!!! The new songs rock!
Posted by Simon Cullis on November 8th, 2004Once in a while a band does come along that completely knocks your socks off, an innovator, a watershed musical event, a revelation band. There are many, but personal favourites that have really done it for me when I’ve first heard them include Guns & Roses, Nirvana, Oasis, and now Keane. Awesome. —-Harley (UK)
Posted by Harley on November 18th, 2004Just slightly less than half of America knows a good thing when they see it and we love these guys. Finally something good to listen to! Listening to them on the radio, though, throws another divisive problem into the mix. Half call them “KEEN” and half call them “KANE.” Which is correct?
Posted by Deb on November 22nd, 2004I Love Tom Chaplin’s voice. Can’t wait to see them perform at The Fillmore – San Francisco ( Dec 2 ). I met the guys last year they performed here (SF, CA) and they are so nice. Tom looks alot handsome up close. When Tom signed my ‘Hopes & Fears’ cd and booklet, he noticed my name and told me that they have a song called ‘Emily’. He has a cute smile. I Love ALL the songs on the CD but I have been replaying to ‘Sunshine’,'This Is the Last Time’& ‘Walnut Tree’(which is not in the CD. Anyone who hasn’t seen them live, are missing out alot. Their performance is excellent! Tom is highly active when he perfroms ‘Bend & Break’. *Sigh…
Posted by Emily on November 23rd, 2004ure a good band and all that and i especially like the song, bedshaped. Tom uve got a gud voice and all but u annoy me every time i look at u. Dont take it in a bad way plz!!
Posted by steve on November 25th, 2004hmmmm same person… duh?
Posted by Goon on December 22nd, 2004Very good melodies….catchy…great voice…great music…Best album of the years.no doubt about that!
Posted by Steeve on December 22nd, 2004I live in the US. since my ears are used to trash, the music is slow. well, that’s what i thought at first. my sister got it for me for christmas. she didn’t know what to get me so she got somehing that she and all her friends love (she lived in scotland for a year). I absolutely love Keane! the lyrics are amazing and have so much more meaning then the junk over here that everyone listens to. I love the sound and I am so glad there isn’t a blaring guitar in it. It’s the best music I’ve heard since I don’t know when. A long time anyway. I’m try to get m friends to get into them, but they say that it’s good and all but it’s slow. oh well, I love it anyway. Keane rules!
Posted by Ayla on January 2nd, 2005After reaading all the above reviews, how about a serious one? I am a 38 yr old man from England who has seen countless ‘next big thing’ bands emerge. I enjoy music across a wide spectrum (rock, metal, blues etc) but can honestly say that Keane blow me away.No lead guitar, just an understated bass, but vocals that MOVE you.Anyone who is not moved by ‘Bedshaped’must have no emotion.
Posted by Chris Sheard on January 12th, 2005Superb album.
i think i was one of the first keane fans in the USA. the american music scene is devoid of anything as sweet as keane. i have always been drawn more to the travis, coldplays and oasis’ of this world than the OARs, dave matthews’, and endless annoying excuses for punk rock bands that dominate the american scene. i am not english and i am not american but i’ll tell you now that keane are proof that the american obsession with hard guitar based music is very very overrated. keane is the best breakout band of the year, hands down. cant wait till they come to cleveland. my ticket is already bought.
Posted by R Skells on January 13th, 2005oh and by the way, SCReW The SCISSOr SISters.
Posted by R Skells on January 13th, 2005Keane is amazing! I got the CD for christmas. EVERY song is good. It makes me feel happy maybe because I really love piano in modern music.
I still like Radiohead better, but Keane is sooo good considering they have no guitar or anything.. Makes it impossible to rock out and go crazy, but hey the music is still amazing
Posted by Len on January 23rd, 2005Sorry Len, I have to disagree with you about the ‘going crazy part’! Just turn the volume up at the chorus of ‘Your eyes open’ and ‘Bend and Break’! It rocks! Beautiful album!
Posted by Chris on January 26th, 2005Keane are the best band in the world-fact!!! The singer Tom Chaplin must have hurt his backside when he fell out of heaven. His voice sounds so sweet! I wish I could play the keyboards like Tim Rice-Oxley and I’ve gotta say if I can’t have Tom, Richard could easily take over!
Posted by Ashleigh on February 3rd, 2005okay I really agree with everyone loving keane , but don’t you peaple think you’re a bit sad falling head- over -heels abou Tom Chaplin?? I mean he’s not that cute and after all, it’s the music that counts…
Posted by sarah on February 7th, 2005I think Tom Chaplin is soooooooooooooooooooo hot!!!!
Posted by Lauren on February 7th, 2005I could care less about the rest of the band members and the songs. If anyone knows how old Tom is, PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Pat M. on February 8th, 2005Caught the band on Saturday Night Live last weekend. When they first started playing, my wife and I were thinking they seemed affected and goofy. But as soon as he started singing, we were awed. Somewhere Only We Know is sublime. As a musician, I was fascinated by the lack of bassist and guitarist. Sweet, retro 80s music. Love it.

Posted by pat on February 14th, 2005I caught KEANE performing on Saturday Night Live (here in the U.S) last week and was blown away! I ran right out and bought the CD. I have’nt had the chance to hear the whole album becuase I keep listening to “Everybody’s Changing” over and over again. I have to completely agree with the gentleman from the UK that said America should listen and learn. What passes for popular music in this country nowadays is total and complete shit! I grew up on 80’s music as it was released, and you could actually understand the lyrics while enjoying the catchy melodies. Now, if its not groaning rap music or the screeching/moaning of Christina Aguilera/Brittney Spears type “singers” you don’t get exposed to it very often. KEANE is a VERY much needed breath of fresh air in the US! There is no lead guitar on any of their songs. How cool is that?!?! I hope to hear a lot more from this band in the future!
Posted by Mark on February 15th, 2005I am 45, trained as a classical musician, and Latin American, thus when I assert that Keane’s is the greatest music I ever heard I am bound to raise eyebrows. But Keane just moved me beyond what I expected. It is Genesis raised to the 20th power, pure British music that honours The Smith’s scream for British music to be British instead of American. And let me be unconventional: Keane reminds me far more of Chopin than it reminds me of a rock/pop band. Its harmonies, technically speaking, are perfect: there is great movement in their music, climaxes that reach not only perfection but also the highest aesthetics. Their romanticism is beyond compare, and I just disagree with the ‘rock’ critics that assert that Keane is ‘candy music:’ their ears have obviously been obliterated by decades of tri-chord basic rock, so they just can’t understand great music. As Stravinsky put it, there are only two kinds of music: good, and bad music. Keane is surprisingly good, surprisingly musical, and their lyrics are deeper and more meaningful that they appear to be. I keep analyzing Keane’s harmonies, just to find out how smoothly they switch keys, without the listening almost realizing it, something that Genesis only achieved in its greatest moments -let’s say, “A trick of the tail.” The problem is that we have gotten too used to music that contains violence, the so-called profanity, and so on, thus critics listen to Keane and their compartamentalized, fossilized minds just don’t have room for the new concept in music and lyrics that Keane is advancing. As for myself, I can’t help it crying when I hear the angelic voice of Tom Chaplin, plus the band lack of evil and violence. I am very proud of Britain for being able to produce its own music, a rap-less, blues-less music to be very proud of -highest quality music. Long live Keane! Long live Great Britain!

Posted by pat on February 15th, 2005Like Mark, I heard Keane on Saturday Night Live. I wasn’t in the room with the TV, cause SNL has gotten pretty weak (especially their musical guests), but I heard the music and was like, “Who is that?!” I got to hear both their songs (has to sit through some cruddy skits to do so) and liked ‘em both. Their stage presence is so-so, but probably fits the music well. I bought the CD yesterday, and it’s one of the best I’ve bought in a couple years.
Posted by Jeff on February 15th, 2005i wish keane could make new songs….ive listened to their others so many times….n they r great i prob remember the lyrics to most of them but they need new songs ….maybe they will make VH1’s top ten if its really good!!!

Posted by pat on February 15th, 2005Preach! Sean you are awesome, you have just conveyed my entire Keane experience in less than 450 words.
BTW they are amazing performers, you should definitely go to one of their concerts.
Posted by Lourdes on February 15th, 2005Sorry to post twice, but something that Jeff said ticked me off. Please don’t say that you like them and then say that their horrible stage presence “fit’s their music”, you’re contradicting yourself and it sounds a lot like you were trying to say that they are boring. They really DO have a staggering amount of stage presence. They are freaking amazing live! Richard and Tim (drums and piano) were great on SNL,
Tom was the only one that wasn’t himself. I believe that it’s because they really aren’t used to performing under that much pressure and he got a bit nervous. Sorry Jeff, didn’t mean to pick on you…
Posted by Lourdes on February 15th, 2005I just saw Keane in concert last night. I am a child of the 70s and have been going to rock concerts for well over 20 years — this was one of the best I’ve seen. It was refreshing to see a band so appreciative of their fans, in fact they almost seemed awed by it all and even appeared reluctant to leave the stage. There are no words to decribe Tom’s amazing voice so I won’t even try. He is a great showman and they all have great stage presence. I should know, I was front and center. I can’t wait for them to come back to Cleveland.

Posted by steph on February 17th, 2005Hey, posting again, I’m so excited about Keane. Last night I was listening Chopin. If you people are unfamiliar with classical music I do recommend you to begin with a BBC recording of the Russian pianist Richter, playing ALIVE Chopin and Debussy. Well, the way Keane’s keyboard plays is akin to Chopin: forceful, with a lot of chords. A long time ago, while I studied classical music for piano, I played a Chopin prelude, same forceful chords, very rythmic…like Keane’s. Trust me, Keane is harmonic perfection: its has musical phrases, it moves from the tonic to the 7th. chord very smoothly, it switches into distant keys, it has declamation, all the classical stuff that rock music critics miss when they write something like “Keane’s nice, but too much sweetness.” Not at all: it’s new, revolutionary pop/rock music. Then, one listens to Keane and it’s hard to listen to rock music anymore: I can’t help it noticing that most other bands are clueless about how to resolve a chord into another, or about how to take the listener along for a harmonic musical ride that leads one to extasis. There is in Keane a healthy influence of the old Genesis, yet Keane is less pompous than Genesis, and more genuinely British. My only worry is that they may actually pay attention to the rock music critics, who are writing nonsense -and I would recommend these critics, given their typical lack of classical music training, to listen a little Chopin, Debussy, even Mendelsohn, and to listen hard at how these composers organized their music. That is the way to really grasp what Keane is doing, the way all of you grasp it, whether or not you studied music, but the critics miss it (they have in mind attitudes, like sex, drugs, and rock and roll, yet attitudes do not necessarily make up good music, quite the opposite). Take for example the trash pop songs: a lot of “attitude,” yet their songs always have exactly the SAME harmonic progression, you can tell exactly what chord comes after the other. Not the case with Keane: there is always a surprise, always a chord that even us classically trained listeners do not expect at all!!! My Keane experience is as follows: after I analyze their harmonies, their passing note between major and minor scales, their switching keys, resolution of chords, then I cry, sometimes for hours, and I tell to myself: “Lord, I have been waiting two decades for a heavenly rock band to show up, and here they are.” It is the way lovers of classical music feel when they go into a concert. Further, Keane are love, Love: no cursing, no concealed violence, and they are poetry. I tell everyone I know to listen to Keane, to allow themselves to be transported into the realm of love. One final thought: I would love to see Keane, sooner or later, associated with Sir George Martin, the truest musician within The Beatles. Just as an antidote, thus they these three musical wonders pay no attention to the critics and continue being themselves, FOR WE NEED YOU VERY MUCH, KEANE, KEEP BEING WHO YOU ARE, WE LOVE YOU DEARLY! In passing, they show to the world all the reservoir of love there is in the U.K, don’t they?
Posted by Ricardo Martinez (Puerto Rico) on February 17th, 2005Oh, in passing: I’m 45 but not bald at all. I am a descedant of Basques, North Spain, green eyed, black-haired, and still in college. It is just that I am not a dynosaur, not fossilized life, so I always remained open to change and eventually found this wonderful music. It is very common for musicians to remain, in a sense, ageless, perhaps because we deal with this particular kind of fine arts that is very abstract and lasts for a while, then vanishes until you listen to it again. The Russian piano player I just mentioned, Richter, was in his seventies, yet you see a picture of him and he has a youthful smile and a joy of living that makes you melt down! My advice for those of you in your twenties: remain open to change, joyful, avoid negative emotions, be playful, live healthy, drink a bit, then you’ll always keep finding wonder in life, as it happened to me with Keane.
Posted by Ricardo Martinez (Puerto Rico) on February 17th, 2005I am from PA/USA just got back from Montreal, Canada after seeing KEANE at the Metropolis this past weekend, had to drive over 20 hours to see them since they sold out here on the east coast.I have been listening to them on broadband Virgin Radio from the minute their single was released and have been in love!!!
Posted by Tanya on February 17th, 2005I hope they realize as I did when I first heard them, they are going to be HUGE I waited for mention of them at the Grammys, hopefully next year. The world dosen’t know what hit them I am so happy for them and that they are finally getting the attention/recognition that they deserve!!
I like how Tom said at the concert”For so long we just wanted to get out there & get recognised, I can’t tell you what its like to come to a concert and see our fans singing along to every word of the song” I also loved how he introduced each song & what inspired them to write it!!! So THANK YOU,THANK YOU KEEP IT COMING & PLEASE TOUR/USA!!!!
Lourdes – man, you’re hard on a guy who was just stating an opinion; however, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, since my post did sound contradictory. I only meant their stage performance was not as intense as what I would expect. Their music to me is passionate, but to many who have listened to the CD; they liked it, but they thought it was pretty “smooth”. I guess I meant their stage presence conveyed more of a “smooth”, maybe jazzy-type presence. To me, I hear rock. Now, I’m confusing myself.
Posted by Jeff on February 18th, 2005Ricardo – I think all the chord progressions are simply an accident that sounded good. It doesn’t sound to me that the pianist/keyboardist has much classical training.
Posted by Jeff on February 18th, 2005I’m seriously in the 7th grade.Did u gey my e-mail?
Posted by Lauren on February 19th, 2005I love Keane so much. They are now officially my favorite band. I dont really think they sound like any other band out there right now, which is nice. They are doing another tour of the states this summer and i hope they come near where I live. They didn’t on their last tour of the US. I downloaded some songs that werent on the album off of iTunes and those songs are amazing, too. Tom’s voice to me is like an angel singing to me. Basically, KEANE KICK BUTT!
Posted by Laura on February 21st, 2005Yes, perhaps you are right, Jeff, I was not very accurate in what I wanted to say when I wrote that. Yet, these chord progressions are excellent, aren’t they? Every chord resolves into the one that is harmonically more fit: try to find that skill in most rock/pop groups! Compared to Kane, most rock/pop groups seem clueless about chord resolution, they just do not resolve the chords they’re using. I may enjoy, i.e., Green Day, but I cannot take the same aesthetic pleasure fron listening to Green Day than I take from listening to Keane -call it my classic prejudice, but I see great beauty in Keane’s music. Even more, I notice in Keane something I learned singing in a choir at my former university in Ohio: Keane’s songs have very good ‘declamation.’ Declamation is when there’s a good fit between music and words. Brahms’ choral works, for example, are masterpieces on declamation, and I am just delighted at also hearing a good match in Keane. Declamation is a gift, anyway, so they don’t need a classical training for that, either. There I hear a Queen influence in Keane’s music, too – I am not saying I like Queen’s music, yet their music/word matching was pretty good.
Posted by Ricardo Martinez on February 24th, 2005Something more about aesthetics: it seems to me that Keane appeals to people who are very ‘artsy,’ for, as I share their music with not-so-artsy people, I do not get a very positive response about this music. I have a feeling that Keane’s songs are deceitfully simple, this is that they appear to be simple but are intrinsically complex, this taking into account that their lyrics are quite mystic…think about that of going up in white light, it’s just so wonderfully mystic, so beautiful. Sometimes I wonder, why I like this group so much? I don’t want to intellectualize this topic, yet as an artsy person I suffer a lot from the crude materialism that prevails in our world, so Keane is like a balsam to me. They have peace, and peace is not easily understood in a world that is very violent, our world.
Posted by Ricardo Martinez (Puerto Rico) on February 24th, 2005My last posting for today. A good and thinking psychiatrist once told me that, getting deep inside most of rock music, there is a lot of rebelliousness and even violence to it. I did not believe him, why would The Rolling Stones convey violence, I told to myself? Yet, now I listen to Keane and have to recognize that this psychiatrist was right: Keane conveys inner peace. And this is the point at which the rock music critics get it all wrong: they perceive this sense of inner peace as being a “candy-pop” kind of feeling, for they do not quite find standards to which to compare Keane’s music -they compare it wrong. And it is not candy-pop, it’s sweetness, true joy, and peace of mind, just that mostly everything around us is violence, so the critics put it in black and white thinking: either rock/pop music is rebellious, or it is candy-pop. My “hopes and fears” -fears- is that Keane may not be imitated, for if they are imitated it is because a movement is being generated. Without copy-cats, a band may become an oddity and lose creative energy in the long run, as it happened to Gentle Giant, a band that made a unique music brand. It’s about more than music, it’s perhaps about proposing a lifestyle less self-destructive than the “drugs, sex and rock and roll,” and I am hopeful that Keane truly carries a different proposal.
Posted by Ricardo Martinez (Puerto Rico) on February 24th, 2005I discovered keane late last year and i finally got the cd for christmas, some unbelievable songs!!
WE MIGHT AS WELL BE STRANGERS one of the best songs i have heard in a long time, its beautiful sounding and the lyrics are complex. that song hypnitized me for a while. i hope to catch one of their shows soon.
anyone else like WE MIGHT AS WELL BE STRANGERS?
Posted by maxdodger on February 24th, 2005Since the advent of CD’s I’ve collected hundreds of them. Almost all have a few great songs. For some the majority of songs are great. Still fewer, and only a handful, are CD’s where EVERY song is phenomenal. Keane’s debut is one of those. And having seen them in concert, they are the real thing! How often do you enjoy not only the songs you know but ones you don’t live in concert? Keane pulls this off spectacularly. They are the real thing and I hope they’re around for “a long, long time”.
Posted by Jon on February 26th, 2005Could someone just for once say that Keane sucks please?? Just to play devil’s advocate even? Goon I think you are onto something with that street team theory, this is getting ridiculous.
Posted by Sean on February 27th, 2005Lately, the music scene has passed me by somewhat, what with being super busy running my own business. And over the last few years I haven’t been into all-male bands, preferring R&B and UK Garage. I was dimly aware of Keane, but Tom Chaplin’s asthmatic delivery got on my nerves and I failed to pursue any interest in them. But, rather strangely, both my sister and best friend bought me their album for Christmas. I was still underwhelmed and didn’t bother listening to it, until Friday. Now I am completely enchanted. Bedshaped is definitely my song of the year (or last year – whatever) – it stirs such strong emotions and is so beautifully performed. The music is mature for such young men – fabulously arranged, being both delicate and forceful at the same time. I agree with everything Ricardo says. I’d be surprised if they hadn’t had some classical training. When I listened, I heard early Genesis (Trick of the Tail), 80s ELO, The Alan Parsons Project, and even footprints from 80s electronica and the Cardigans. I’ve always preferred keyboard-lead music, written in minor keys and melancholic, and this fits the bill nicely. Why didn’t I take any notice before? Because I thought they were just another boy rock band, most of which bore me to death, and because their image is not appealing to me. Comparing them to Travis and Oasis is an insult. Travis make “nice” tunes, but they’re not particularly grown up, and dare I say, they are singularly pedestrian. Oasis made some anthemic tunes, but I just thought they were a bunch of arrogant tossers trying to replicate the Beatles – I’m all the happier now that they no longer appear on my radar. Can’t quite graps the attraction to Tom Chaplin though – he looks like he’s about 12 years old and is bit pudgy faced for my tastes. However, I think my conversion is total. Hopefully the Christian fundies won’t come after me with offers of exorcism, and it’s nice to know that there are some intelligent americans around who appreciate decent music.

Posted by Not-normally-into-bands on February 27th, 2005so…. Sean… ban anyone lately?
Posted by Goon on February 28th, 2005We’re more than happy to have people participate in discussions on the site, you have to understand it’s a little suspicious when Keane gets like 50 times the number of posts that everything else does.
They aren’t that popular, and on top of it all, everyone is posting positive reviews that are extremely wordy and a little too prefabricated. Obviously we can’t ban everyone that posts stuff on this review, especially since they seem to be all coming from different IP addresses. I just don’t want our website to be taken over by people trying to promote Keane because it’s getting in the way of everything else.
If it comes down to it, I’ll just close this thread off and leave it at that.
Posted by Sean on February 28th, 2005I think it came down to it around 50 posts ago…
Posted by Goon on February 28th, 2005For the record, my post was entirely authentic and genuine. I found this site last night when I was looking for info on Keane, and I’d never heard of spacejunk before that. I’m not aware of any major conspiracy to promote Keane, and even if there was one, I’m not a part of it.
Maybe, just maybe, people really like Keane and that’s why it’s getting more posts than reviews for other artists.
Out of interest Sean, what did you find unreal about my first post? Do people write like that – yes, I do – like it or loathe it, that’s how I write. I write for a living, and I’m big enough and ugly enough to weather any criticism of that.
Posted by Not-normally-into-bands on February 28th, 2005“I just don’t want our website to be taken over by people trying to promote Keane because it’s getting in the way of everything else.”
Really? Surely a thread about Keane is discrete from everything else, so how is it getting in the way? ;-0
Posted by Not-normally-into-bands on February 28th, 2005I love this band. Im taking voice lessons so i informed my vocal instructor that this is the voice that i would love to have as a singer. keane are very overrated.. I don’t think they’re revolutionary at all like people are saying. It also doesn’t help that the lead singer has a fat face. Think they will be forgotten in about a year or so.
i hate keane: http://greven.125mb.com
Posted by zaq23 on March 14th, 2005why are people posting as if they’re talking to Keane?
Posted by Goon on March 14th, 2005Hi, Sean and Zaq23. Interesting that you like to play devil’s advocate. Now, if Keane is forgotten in about a year or so, and we keep having Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and all rap and pop trash around, then popular music is lost forever, and we’ll live in Trash Fine Arts Planet. Green Day is fantastic from the viewpoint of political fight, and they have fantastic lyrics against the system, but musically what they do is rather sung poetry, instead of being music with lyrics. I can still like Green Day, but it’s a different proposal than Keane’s. Again, if Keane if forgotten in one year it means that people are getting brutish about music, and that people’s ability to appreciate good music is going backwards, so we might soon have musicians go beating trees with a large stick and that might even get into CD’s and sell millions, I don’t know. I spent time and money, year after year, to get a proper musical training, so when I hear Tim playing with the subtleties of a classical pianist it moves me to tears…how many pop or rock keyboard players go from “pianissmo” (pressing the keys very softly) to “fortissimo” (pressing the keys very hard) the way Tim does it, according to every song’s needs? Isn’t that to be an excellent musician? And, Goon, don’t be surprised that Keane’s members might read this forum, why not? At least I hope they do, so they get the true appreciation of their talents that the sold-out rock critics (not all of them, but most write what they are SUPPOSED to write) purposefully omit about Keane. Last, to Heido: great comment, this about the “stupid and republican”! We here in Puerto Rico are Americans but without the right to vote in any Federal election, so we are not responsible about the last election.

Posted by jono on May 6th, 2005Keane is/are absolutely the most amazing band i have ever heard. I work at Barnes & Noble and they began playing Hopes and Fears in the store and that was where i first heard Tom Chaplin’s voice (mmm!) probably about a year ago. And thank god for that because otherwise, i may have never heard them until just recently when they started playing Keane on local radio stations. I have been lucky enough to see them in concert twice now, just this week on Monday May 9th and back in November for a christmas concert. I have been completely blown away by them both times, and I am now in love with Tom… sigh. Honestly, this is an album that I have owned and been listening to for almost a year and it never gets old or worn out. It’s one that I can listen to a million times in a row and it only makes me want to listen to it more. I love you Keane! Can’t wait for your next album
Posted by Rebecca in Seattle on May 12th, 2005I just got back from The Fillmore in Denver after seeing Keane live. I wanted to get on here and rave about how amazing they were, but I can’t. Don’t get me wrong they were unreal, but I am speechless. There really aren’t words to describe what I just witnessed and experienced. I truly haven’t felt like this since I saw Radiohead at Red Rocks, when Thom Yorke let us, the inspired audience, finish “Karma Police” for him. Bravo Europe (minus the French, Air is weak-sauce) for bringing us another talent for the ages. I cannot wait to hear the new cd, even though Keane gave us a taste tonight with three new tracks. I am definately a fan for life I’m afraid.

Posted by Mayra on May 22nd, 2005Hi everyone and Ricardo …I’m a piano teacher here in Brazil, 43 years old, teaching since I was 20 and I completely agree with you!!!! Keane brings back melody and great harmonies to pop music!!!
Posted by cristina moller on May 25th, 2005Yo everybody. I’m posting because I absolutely adore Keane. Their songs are from the soul, and bring meaning into my life. When my pet goldfish died, listening to ‘Somewhere only we know’ really helped me to recouperate myself back into the real world.
Posted by Lizzie String Vestica on May 26th, 2005And the icing on the cake is Tome Chaplin. Can you say GORGEOUS? That guy is so hot, he makes my teeth sweat. I’m getting chills just thinking about him. Sweating and chills? YOU SEE WHAT THIS GUY DOES TO ME!?
Apart from that, Keane rock, and I can’t wait for their next album. I heard ‘Emily’ at my friend’s house, and it was fantastic! I need to hear it again! Sadly, she doesn’t like Keane (I’m trying to convert her) so she won’t play it. BUT I MUST HEAR IT! MWAHAHAHA!
Hugs and kisses xxx
I saw Keane live last week. They are PHENOMINAL. The album is great, and the band is amazing all it’s own. It’s really honest… you know? The kind of honest that can make anyone cry.

Will that do?
I bought a Cd of Keane live recodings yesterday – it ROCKS. I can’t stop listening to it!
Posted by Lizzie on May 28th, 2005One day Keane will rule the (music) world… and I can’t wait cos their music rocks (I’ve already said that, haven’t I?)
Random.
May 27th, 2005 – Montreal. Keane was spectacular. I can’t believe how good they were live. I think that Hopes and Fears is the best record since ’87s “Strangeways here we come” by the Smiths. Bu unlike the Smiths, The Keane boys don’t have egos, are genuine performers.
Posted by Fence on May 29th, 2005Hi im a friend of ‘lizzie’ (not her psycopathic friend)
Posted by Joey on May 30th, 2005Great to hear so many fans out there. Just discovered Keane a few weeks ago and love the CD from beginning to end. Seeing them in concert in Boston this weekend and judging from the other comments, very much looking forward to it. Now, as for the comments of the greatest band ever heard, let’s not get crazy hear (e.g., The Beatles are in another universe).

Posted by The REAL psychopathic friend on June 3rd, 2005Olaf my love, you have your very own film *screams fangirl\boy scream*. You are sooooo much better than Tom Chaplin. Is it me, or doesn’t he look like Sam from LoTR?
Muse or Keane? Hmmm… I have to say Muse. Something about Keane just annoys me.
Keane ruling the music world – that has as much chance as a snowball’s in Hell.
Who else has heard Emily?
I love tom chaplin!
Posted by Wendy on June 5th, 2005I think the whole band rule! Thank god they have finally launched themselves.
Posted by Miss Devilishly Naughty on June 7th, 2005Good on you!
I think Keane is a brilliant band they have really rocked the rock side of music with out guitars. They are a real credit to the bussiness.
Posted by MAD DRUMMER on June 7th, 2005KEEP ON ROCKIN!!!!!!!!!
Yo-
Posted by Psychopathic friend on June 7th, 2005Lizzie, you have competition. This ‘Wendy (plus about a dozen more people)’ seem to also like a-certain-guy-I’m-not-supposed-to-tease-so-I-won’t-say-his-name. At least YOU know basic capitilisation, and can write a full paragraph. I’m very proud of you.
So ladies, who will win the battle for the biggest guy-I’m-not-supposed-to-make-fun-of? Will there be blood gore and (gasp!) rude words? ONe can only hope so. I mean, some guys pay money to see that sort of thing.
Let the games begin
gosh keane rocks!! they’re gonna rule music one day.

Oh my god, I love Keane so much. Their sound is so unique. You simply can not compare them to anyone else at this point. i want to see them in concert, but I don’t think they’ll be doing anything close to me for a while…I live in New York State. Keane, please tour near me within this year!!! Does anyone know of tour dates set in the future for them?
